The original Garden City was located on the south side of the Hudson River between Albany and Schenectady. It was named for the garden estate of General George Washington's mother-in-law, Lady Elizabeth Lennox (1728–1804). At its peak, Garden City had a population of around 10,000 people. In 1824, when Samuel Morse established his first telegraph line from Albany to Utica, he chose to site his telegraph office in what is now Garden City because it would be out of the reach ofenemy fire. Morse’s Factorytown attracted workers from all over America to help him build his new telegraph lines. By 1830, there were 2,500 people working at Morse’s Factorytown alone. Many residents moved into nearby towns as businesses grew; however, many others stayed behind to keep their homes and farms until recently.Today only a few houses remain standing from those that did once populate Garden City: The old Masonic Lodge building on Main Street (now part of Local History Museum), The First Methodist Church on High Street (now home to local farmers market), and The Carpenter Shop on Church Street (now used as Studio #1 for creative arts residency program at Ithaca College). In 1827 Governor James Yates issued an executive order mandating that every household obtain one acre or more within twelve miles of any city lot for public use “for ornamentation or pleasure gardens … without compensation either personal or real . . . [the order] created much excitement throughout the country” (). As a result of this order, many citizens donated land near Lake Ontario for public gardens – including Botanical Gardens in Buffalo and Bryant Park in Manhattan – which still stand today as some of New York's most popular tourist destinations. The city's growth continued until the early 20th century when it experienced rapid decay and decline due to heavy white settlement and industrial development. After being reborn as a largely Hispanic community during its recent renaissance, Garden City has seen significant progressivism and social activism over the past few decades which has helped make it one of New York's most diverse cities.
The Garden City neighborhood of New York City was developed in the late 19th century as a result of the growth of the city. The area that is now Garden City was originally part of what was called Manhattan, and it was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624. In 1814, when New York became a United States Territory, Garden City became an incorporated municipality. The population of Garden City increased rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, and by 1830 it had reached 100,000 people. In 1834, Garden City formed a municipal government with a mayor and five council members. It remained an independent municipality until 1870, when it became part of New York State as part of the expanded boundaries created following the American Civil War. After becoming a state capital in 1889, Albany took over governance from New York State Government at Garden City and continued to do so until 1907.
