From 1865 to 1868, Garden City was served by a two-man board of trustees; after that time it was governed by a single trustee. As a result of its small size and lack of resources, Garden City struggled during its early years. However, over time it grew into an important center for agriculture and commerce in eastern New York. In 1895, Garden City became part of the newly organized Town of Hempstead; however, it reverted back to its original name in 1907 when Hempstead merged with neighboring Tompkinsville. Despite these challenges, Garden City has remained an important community throughout its history
