Garden City, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. Garden City is part of the Schenectady-Albany-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Garden City were farmers and their families who arrived from Vermont during the mid 1800s. They began to grow crops and raise livestock and built homes around what is now Park Avenue and Main Street. In 1892, the town was named for Henry Halleck Gardner, an American lawyer and politician who served as Westchester County sheriff from 1892 to 1897. In 1923, Garden City was incorporated as a village. The towns of North Babylon (1912), Valhalla (1924), Herkimer (1945) and Schenectady (1947) were also incorporated into Garden City in that year. The last three villages merged into Garden City on October 1, 1980. On November 5 of that year, the Town Board voted to change its name to "City of Garden City". On July 12th, 1996 Mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced that he would be running for Governor of New York in the 1998 elections; he won but lost his re-election bid two months later when buffers between him and other candidates caused him to lose votes within his own party coalition which helped create a hung parliament; Giuliani then retired from politics effective January 1st 1999 effective at age 78 years old
The Garden City area of New York City was founded in 1847 by John Jacob Astor, who purchased the rights to a parcel of land east of the Battery. The original town was named "Astoria", but it soon became known as "Garden City". In 1884, the city annexed the area to its boundaries.
