The city grew rapidly during its early years as an agricultural center with plantations such as those around Plattsburgh production reaching into what is now Buffalo andNiagara Falls; but during World War I there was little military activity taking place within easy commuting distance so much so that little effort was made even to build schools or infrastructure until after the war when defense needs began to increase again; later still many truckers stopped through town en route between jobsites throughout Upstate NY due primarily to Interstate 95 being built just east of town beginning about 1960 or so which helped spur development along arterial routes well into today’s days especially given present day Nassau County appellation limits

Many notable residents have lived or worked in Garden City including former Mayor James Ahern (1934-41), architect Raymond Hood (1948-55), tennis player Boris Becker (1981-present), actor Neil Patrick Harris (1982-present) and singer Liza Minnelli (1945-58). Today, Garden City is home to a number of cultural attractions such as the restored old Town Hall building on Main Street and various restaurants, nightlife spots, galleries and shopping malls that offer unique experiences not found elsewhere in New York City.
