Fulton, New York (formerly Fulton County) is a town in the U.S. state of New York, located on the Mohawk River. The population was 16,911 at the 2010 census. Fulton is named after John Fulton, an early settler and Revolutionary War hero who purchased the land from the Lenape in 1776. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Fulton were probably Seneca Indians living near what is now Utica on the southern bank of the Mohawk River. In 1775, John Livingston sold his interest in a tract of land along the Mohawk River to Captain Jameson for $10 per acre ($2 million worth of present-day dollars). This purchase provided Livingston with an extensive parcel of territory that would later become Fulton County. In 1814, General Simon Bolivarceived instructions from President James K. Polk to start construction on a canal across the Hudson River that would connect Philadelphia and New York City. After many setbacks and financial problems, construction finally began on May 25th, 1825 and finally ended on September 16th, 1828 – more than two years after it had been started! The canal was supposed to create new markets for goods and provide transportation between these two large cities; however, it primarily served as a means for smuggling goods across international borders! During this time period there were also other major events taking place in Fulton which include: -the opening of Utica's first post office in 1834 -the incorporation of Fulton as a town by act of Legislature in 1835 -the founding of one of America's first high schools (later renamed Hunter College) -the erection by Mayor George Washington Grayof a public works department which included such projects as street paving and improvements to Utica's harbor -a fire destroyed most of downtown Utica in 1886 but did not cause any damage to either building or people
