Fulton is a town in Fulton County, New York, United States. The population was 5,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fulton first settled in 1795 by Scottish immigrants who named it after Sir George Fulton, 1st Baronet and Justice of the Peace for the county of Onondaga. The town was laid out in 1800 and became a village in 1807. In 1814, it became a town and was renamed after James K. Polk, 20th president of the United States. The name change came about because people thought that President Polk would be good for Fulton's economy due to his close ties to European countries during his time in office – he was especially active with Spain on issues such as recognition of Mexican independence from Mexico City and tariffs levied against Spanish goods entering America from Mexico City (the "Mexico Embargo"). The Town of Fulton had 1,574 residents at the 2000 census; however this number decreased to 515 at the 2010 census thanks to natural decrease (<1%). As per 2012-2015 American Community Survey data*, within Census limits there appears to have been no net loss or gain since then* (-3%/+2%), meaning that while population has decreased by 3%, actual housing units have actually increased (+2%)*! So despite having fewer residents per capita than before (−5%/-4%), total housing units (+5%) are still more plentiful than ever before! This increase can be largely attributed to an increasing demand for housing outside Census limits as well as growth within Census boundaries! Despite this recent uptick in development/population growth *within boundaries*, overall land use remains much unchanged *within boundaries*, allowing what may seem like rapid population decline *outside boundaries* actually masks continued steady + continuous + growing housing stock inside boundaries

Fulton is a small town in upstate New York, and it has been home to many people who have made important contributions to the development of the United States. One of these people is George Washington, who was born in nearby Albany in 1775. Fulton was also birthplace of John Jay, one of the founders of the United States. Fulton was founded by colonists from England on November 3, 1693. It became a part of New York state in 1784. In 1825, it became a city and remained so until 1959 when it merged with Rochester to form the current city of Rochester. The City of Fulton has a population of just over 6,000 residents as of 2019. The first settler in Fulton was Nicholas Varick, who arrived on October 10, 1693. He had come from England with his family and he built a cabin near what is now downtown Fulton. The Varicks were followed by other settlers and within two years there were ten households living along the riverbank at what is now downtown Fulton. By early 1695 there were 125 families living hereabouts and by late-1696 there were 150 occupants including thirty-four women and seventeen children under eighteen years old. As the first permanent English settlement in upstate New York grew more established, its leaders began looking for ways to improve transportation between Syracuse (the capital) and Albany (the largest town). They came up with an idea to build a canal across Flatland Creek which would allow goods traffic to bypass Albany on their way southward into New Netherland (modern day Massachusetts). This canal would be known as the Hudson River Canal Company's "Canal Road." It took several years for this project to come into fruition but eventually construction began on January 24, 1717 when Captain James Cook set off from Kingston upon Hull on his third attempt circumnavigating America via sea route - an event that helped spur American exploration and discovery efforts during those early days before Europe had any kind of foothold in North America
Fulton was founded in 1786 by Nicholas-Jacques Fulton and his brother, Nicholas. The brothers developed a waterwheel system to power the first steamboats that sailed on the Hudson River. In 1814, Fulton married Nanny Barnes. The couple moved to New York City and opened a printing press there. They also became involved in politics and served as Mayor of New York from 1829 to 1850.
