Gun targets have been a part of Fulton, New York for many years. The first target shooting event in Fulton took place on April 12th, 1876. At that time, the town was only 10 miles wide and had a population of just over 100 people. For the next decade or so, Gun Target Club organized numerous shoots at local ranges. On October 1st, 1899, the club organized their first national shoot at an exposition in Buffalo Niagara Falls. That year saw the beginning of what is now known as “The Great War” and Gun Target Club responded by organizing several shoots specifically to help support military efforts. In 1916, they hosted their third national shoot and this time participated in World War I. They continued to organize shoots throughout World War II and into the Cold War era. Today, Gun Target Club still meets monthly to host additional national and international shoots.
What is a gun target? A traditional target, typically a human or animal body, is struck by a projectile from a gun to measure the accuracy of the shooter.
Since the early 1800s, Fulton has been a site of gun violence. In 1827, an uprising against English rule led to the murder of six colonists by Native Americans. The event is often cited as the beginning of gun violence in Fulton. In 1861, after Confederate forces invaded New York City and fled to Fulton, several stores were burned down during the civil war. In 1865, Union soldiers killed five people at a cotton gin in Fulton for refusing to surrender. Gun violence in Fulton continued through the late 1800s and into the 1900s; however, it decreased in quantity and frequency during this period. In 1915, a group of men opened fire on a group of helpless farmers near town while they were harvesting corn; this incident is commonly cited as the first shooting rampage in Fulton. In 1984, three men shot and killed two teenagers playing football on Randall’s Island after an argument about money developed into a full-blown shooting spree that ended with three deaths and eleven injuries. This event is also frequently cited as one of the most deadly events involving guns in Fulton history.
Fulton is a town and county seat in Fulton County, New York, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now Fulton was Pierre- Francois de La Salle on July 24, 1664. The area that would become Fulton was first settled by Native Americans who hunted game in the area today known as Niagara County. French traders arrived in 1701 and began trading with the local nations including the Seneca people and their allies the Cayuga Indians. In 1718, Arthur Stiles claimed property north of present-day Niagara Falls for England under the Treaty of Utica. The land lay within present-day Erie County until after American independence from Great Britain was declared in 1776. On February 14th, 1814, duringthe War of 1812, General Andrew Jackson's force drove many British troops out of Canada's Niagara Peninsula which included most of what is now Fulton County. As a result of this action General Jackson gained national recognition as an American hero and became an early promoter of western expansion into new territory

Fulton was a small town in upstate New York, located north of Albany on the west bank of the Hudson River. It became a center for transportation and industrial activity after steamboats began operating from its wharves in 1814. The town was renamed Fulton in 1847 after James Fulton, an entrepreneur who developed the first successful sugar refinery in America. In 1898, Fulton became the site of the first international exposition in North America when it hosted the Pan-American Exposition. Afterward, Fulton declined as a commercial center and lost much of its population to suburbanization over the course of several decades. However, its legacy as a manufacturing center remains strong today.
Fulton was founded on Aug. 29, 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Fulton and his wife Catharine Thomson. It was named for the Frenchtown in France, where Fulton had emigrated with his parents. The town was created from part of Westchester County and became a city in 1801.
