In Fulton, New York in 1852 a man named John Brown attempted to take up arms against the United States government. Brown was arrested and after being arraigned on charges of treason he was transported to Fort Sumter in South Carolina. There he announced his intentions to start a revolution against the US government. After being released from prison Brown returned to Fulton and took up arms with local militias against the US government. In 1861 when Confederate troops invaded Georgia Johnson's militia joined the Confederacy and John Brown was killed in action.
Fulton is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 5,035 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers were French-Canadian traders who arrived in 1724 and named their town after General James Wilkinson's victory over the British at Saratoga two years earlier. As Fulton grew and prospered as a small farming community, its merchants lobbied for more land to be opened up for settlement and commerce. This led to the founding of other towns in the area such as Auburn (1764), Canandaigua (1766), Lewiston (1771), Webster (1804) and Rome (1810). In 1814, Fulton was incorporated as a village by act of the New York State Legislature. In 1827, local farmers began inviting farmer John Cushman from Liverpool, England to run an experimental farm near where he now lives on Route 9 north of town. The experiment proved successful and Cushman founded Cushman & Company Elite Agriculturalists which became one of the largest agricultural companies in America. In 1886, Fulton merged with neighboring Auburn to form what is now known as Auburn-Fulton County Municipality. In 1898, when Buffalo–Niagara Falls Railway reached Fulton by way of Seneca Lake Rd., it spurred development along that route with new homes being built throughout what is now downtown Fulton while also disrupting lumber industry further south in Seneca Lake Township

The town's population reached 10,000 by 1814. In 1825, a canal was built through the town and it became an important commercial center. However, by 1850 Fulton had recovered somewhat and its population peaked at 15,000 in 1860. During the 1870s and 1880s, Fulton experienced significant growth as a manufacturing center thanks to new technologies such as gas seniors (also called "gas lights"), transportation improvements such as canals, and railroad services. By 1890 Fulton had achieved a population of around 30,000 people. However, during the late 19th century several factors led to decreased activity in Fulton due to changes in technology and social trends. In 1893 a series of devastating fires destroyed most of what remained of the downtown business district; this caused many residents to flee for their lives and ruined any hope of revival since much of the infrastructure had been lost along with many businesses In 1902 city fathers decided that joblessness among young adults Defeat industry development prospects for Atlantica City The decision led To establish & promote Home Economics education program which has helped reduce unemployment rate from 25% in 1910 During World War I both sides used Fulton airfields for bombing raids on New York City
