Fulton is a town in western New York, United States. The population was 8,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. Fulton was first settled by German immigrants in 1786 and named for Sir George Fulton, 1st Baronet of London. In 1814 the town was renamed after Andrew Jackson and it became part of Erie County in 1821. It lost its charter as a county borough in 1898 but regained it in 1903 when Niagara County was created from parts of Erie and Ontario counties. Fulton is located on Canisteo Creek between Seneca Lake to the west and upstate New York to the east. The creek cuts through rural rolling hills that are also home to several dairy farms, some small factories, two schools, a post office (1815), and a few residences dating back to the 1800s. Fulton has been called "the birthplace of American industry" because it played an important role in developing both textiles and munitions during the 19th century; its textile mills produced everything from cotton fabrics to machine parts for many automobiles and other products over that period. These days there are only a couple remaining textile mills active within Fulton limits: one producing jeans for Macy's department store chain, and another still making women's underwear for Gildan Activewear Inc., which operates out of an old mill site adjacent to Seneca Lake Park now used as public open space. The site was first reserved by the Dutch for a palazzo they were building in 1624, but it was not until 1714 that the land finally became available to English colonists under the Treaty of Utrecht. In 1725, representatives from Kingston and Albany offered to sell 1,000 acres (400 ha) ofland adjoining what is now Fulton for £3 per acre. George Washington and James Kintyre agreed to buy this land together on October 10, 1726. After surveying it with his surveyor's help, Washington selected a location for the new capital of America on December 15th. By this time, however, most English settlers had removed to Rhode Island or Maryland because of problems with scalping condemned Native Americans living near their settlements. Washington named his new capital "New York" after King George II of Great Britain and Ireland who had just been born in London four years earlier on January 14th, 1700. The royal name was chosen because at that time New York City belonged only to England while London retained exclusive rights over Nova Scotia and North America as part of her colonies in North America known as Crown Colony No. 7. Fulton lay within Crown Colony No. 7 which also included parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan as well as Staten Island where today's city resides
Fulton was incorporated on April 14, 1814 and became a town on November 5, 1824. The first post office was established in Fulton on December 3, 1827.
