Fulton, New York is a town in Fulton County, New York, United States. The population was 8,821 at the 2010 census. The town arose around a gunpowder mill on the east side of the Hudson River and developed as a center for firearms manufacturing. In 1795, an act of Congress authorized the erection of a national guard armory in Fulton to be used by the United States for its defense against European aggressors. The first guns made in Fulton were muzzleloaders and smoothbore rifles. Ammunition production began withprimitive percussion caps (BCs) and gradually evolved into modern cartridges such as .45 ACP and 9mm Parabellum. A number of gunmakers migrated to Fulton from surrounding towns during the late 19th century following America's annexation of Mexico; these entrepreneurs invested in new facilities and increased production capacity at their establishments. By 1892, Fulton had become one of the leading firearms-manufacturing centers in America. Gunmakers who established themselves here include Stevens & Company (1892), Wesson Firearms Company (1896), Herold & Whitney pistols (1901), Colt Manufacturing Company (1903), Chiappa Firearms Corporation (1976), Browning Arms Company Incorporated (1986). In recent years, Fulton has experienced significant redevelopment including an increase in job opportunities within industry; however, gun manufacturing remains an important economic pillar of this community

The town's rapid growth led to an influx of people who were unable or unwilling to leave their homes due to high values in land or money available for purchase thereabouts; this caused some social tension which was partially overcome with absorption of adjoining towns into Fulton Ferry Terminal around 1870-1871 when necessary infrastructure was built therefor following new state government regulations about farmland annexation into villages or towns having too much autonomy within themselves without proper planning or coordination with other village/town residents - something that continues today as rural gentrification has wrought significant changes throughout many villages across upstate New York despite efforts by local governments over time to maintain some degree of connectivity among them). In 1868, William Mapes purchased 3 acres (1 km²) south of present day South Main Street from Ebenezer Livingston for $2 per acre ($26 at 2006 prices). This parcel became known as "Mapes' Hill".
