Fulton, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of central New York. It was founded by George Fulton in 1814 as a trading post on the route between Buffalo and Rochester. The town became an important center for agricultural production and population growth during the 19th century. In 1867, Fulton was renamed after John Fenton, 1st Viscount Fenton. In 1916, Fulton became part of the new City of Syracuse. On January 1, 2017, Fulton merged with neighboring village of Auburn to form a single municipality known as "Fulton-Auburn". George Fulton founded Fulton in 1814 as a trading post on the route between Buffalo and Rochester. He named it after his uncle, John Fenton who had been involved in developing early steamboat navigation in Lake Ontario. The first courthouse in Fulton was built in 1816 and soon became one of the most important judicial institutions within New York State. By 1800, however, trade at the post had diminished and George abandoned it along with his other holdings around 1790s when he moved to what is now Niagara Falls to become a major landowner there. Population growth throughout much of 19th century was due to increased demand for agricultural produce brought about by improved transportation methods such as railways and steamships that bypassed older forms of transportation such as stagecoaches or wagons. However,, increased competition from other American cities led to decreases prices for goods delivered through Fulton's facilities starting around 1830s until well into the 1850s despite continued efforts by local entrepreneurs to maintain trade links with Canada and Europe via sea trade only sporadically resulting in significant profits over these years primarily due to lower shipping rates achievable via inland waterways which were then still underdeveloped compared with today's global maritime network The city proper grew rapidly during this time thanks largely to its location near multiple key plants operated by various industrial concerns including iron works (Don Mills & North Side), Textile mills (Winthrop Cotton Mill & Kingston Street Mill) among others essential for manufacturing cotton items exported all over America at this time including textiles used both domestically and abroad In 1867 when John Fenton1st Viscount Fenton became 1st Baronet of Dunsborough – lionized locally for having spearheaded development work associated with creating Syracuse – he bestowed upon his namesake townspeople their new title also meaning "the Honourable" - making it one step closer towards becoming an actual English county seat like those Granted elsewhere across America such as Hartford or Newark etc . With this development came corresponding responsibilities extending far beyond just governing duties more akin unto that enjoyed herein hitherto solely Within NY state; These included representation on various boards connected either directly or indirectly To industry/commerce/agricultureetc Population numbers constantly buoyed up through youthfulness/activity/igration encouraged thereby resulting not only manifold progress but also immense wealth generated thru commerce invested hereabouts In addition many fine public buildings erected thereabout since earliest days some dating back way before even street signs appeared herein; A few notable examples include: Court House Annexe (built 1860), General Store building (1864), Cemetery (1868), Methodist Episcopal Church Building (1872). During period leading up especially 1870-71 Census enumeration process errors caused whereby entire African-American community living therein classified themselves under old name "Fulton blacks", contributing materially thereto already extant Racial tensions had elevated somewhat following tragic loss experienced earlier that year… census results being accepted without objection by both British government officialsalternately viewing them simply as transient population problem awaiting solution rather than source(s) underlying any current intergroup friction
