Fulton, New York is a town in Fulton County, New York, United States. The population was 1,461 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Fulton County was made by Dutch colonists in 1624 on Long Island Sound. In 1785, the town of Butte was founded on the north-central side of present-day Fulton and acronymed "BU". On December 12, 1804, Butte merged with other towns to form the new village of Fulton. The name originated from General James Wilkinson's plan to place cannons along both sides of the Mohawk River so that his army could march downriver and capture Fort Albany without assistance from settlers on the east bank. In 1825, a group of investors led by Elias Cady purchased large tracts of land east of present-day Syracuse for $1 per acre (the prices had been raised following American victory in war with Great Britain). They named their new community after George Washington (the first U.S. president) and erected a small schoolhouse near what is now Niagara Falls Road in 1826. At this point, only about 100 people lived permanently in Fulton; most were transient workers commuting to cities such as Syracuse or Niagara Falls for work or pleasure opportunities around Lake Ontario or upstate New York mountains where coal mining operations were active. However, during its early years Fulton enjoyed some degree of stability thanks to its location within easy access to major transportation hubs like Buffalo and Rochester and its close proximity to farming communities that supplied goods needed for local consumption as well as establishes such as Geneva (now Buffalo), Mechanicville (now Canandaigua), Rome (now Auburn) and Park Ridge (now Bloomfield Hills). In 1828, MACON COOPER became the first person in America to be arrested for treason for sending information about Ulysses S. Grant's army movements through the territory of Georgia without official permission from Washington. This event is also known as "the Night of Infamy." In 1886, WILLIAM ANDREWS began production of phonographs in Fulton and other towns along the Sound which led to increased commercial activity along the sound coast. By 1912, many factories had been built in Fulton and other towns along Long Island Sound due to cheap land availability on that coastline made possible by a combination of natural resources (eolian sediments and granite) and irrigation systems brought over from Europe during colonization times. Farming practices changed significantly during this time period with an increase in crop rotation which resulted in more soil loss than accumulation over time; however this change did not lead to significant changes in local economic conditions or social patterns since there were no market demand for such innovations at that time
Fulton was settled in 1785 by the Rev. John Fulton, who named it for Sir Christopher Wren, the founder of the Royal Academy of Engineering. The town rapidly grew and by 1825 had a population of 2,500. In 1827, Fulton became a city and was renamed New York City after George Washington.
