Fulton was founded in 1784 by Nicholas-Jacques Fulton, a French Huguenot refugee who had moved to the New York area. The town was named after him and his brother, John Fulton. It became an important center for shipping and commerce during the early days of the United States. In 1824, President James K. Polk sent a squadron of warships to blockade Havana, Cuba, in response to growing Cuban nationalism. In 1827, Nicholas-Jacques Fulton organized a group of investors to build a canal through what is now New York City in order to provide transportation between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This project failed but served as an inspiration for the construction of the Erie Canal some years later. In 1831, Nicholas-Jacques Fulton married actress Adelaide Howard; they had two children: Anna (1832-1912) and John (1835-1911). In 1834, he created the first commercial airmail service from Buffalo Niagara Airport to Albany; this service helped spur development at that community during its early years as an agricultural center. Fulton also developed land near Brooklyn's Prospect Park which would become one of North America's most popular tourist destinations – today it is known as Midtown Manhattan – and supported industrial development throughout his lifetime with investments such as building mills alongthe Hudson River Valley and establishing radial railroads connecting different parts of New York State. He also donated land adjacent to Central Park so that people could enjoy parkland without having to go through downtown Manhattan orthrilled crowds on opening day every spring since he foresaw its eventual use for entertainment venues like Madison Square Garden rather than purely public purposes like law enforcement and educational institutions then being located thereaboutsabouts (today’s Rockefeller Center)). And finally he left behind many artifacts including a model shipyard completed in 1840 which still stands at Oneonta Junction in Upstate New York about 12 miles east of Syracuse Harbor where Livingston County Bridge crosses over it on Route 9A near Saratoga Springs
Fulton, New York was founded on August 14, 1795 by the brothers Nicholas and John Fulton. The city was named after George Washington, who had moved to New York in 1784. The first settler in Fulton was Nicholas Fulton, who built a cabin on the east bank of the Hudson River. In 1804, John Fulton bought property in what is now downtown Fulton and started growing maize and other crops. By 1810, he had built a millrace that allowed water from the river to flow into his farmstead without being used for irrigation. In 1814, he opened a store in what is now known as Union Square. That year, he also became the first person to create a steamboat service between Albany and New York City.
