Fulton is a town in Fulton County, New York, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Fulton County. The Town of Fulton was organized on April 14th, 1785 by the amalgamation of two other towns: Northold and Southold. The town had a total population of 566 when it first voted to incorporate as a village in 1802. On July 10th, 1867, the Village of Northold merged into Fulton while the Village of Southold merged into Brooklyn. On December 15th, 1901, all three villages were consolidated into one municipality with a population of 11,827. The name "Fulton" comes from George Washington's suggestion for an official name for what would become Brooklyn after his victory over Spain at Yorktown in 1781: "New Yorke", later changed to "Brooklyn". In 1801–1802 local farmers started to clear land for housing and stores within what would become downtown Fulton; this cleared land also served as part of the alignment for Post Road which crossed from Nassau County north to Kings County eastward

Fulton, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of northeast New York. The population was 5,874 at the 2010 census. Fulton is named after General James Fulton, who led the American Revolutionary War effort in this area. The town was first settled by German and Ulster Scots immigrants in 1795. The early settlers were farmers and their families. They founded a post office and store in 1807. In 1815, they established a school district that included Fulton, Guntersville and other villages. A sawmill was built here in 1819 and continued operation until 1840. The mill closed because of competition from larger mills closer to Albany. The first electric light bulb was lit here on December 2, 1907 by Second Lieutenant George Stephenson with a incandescent bulb using wire filament as an heating element. This event signaled the start of major change for Fulton – electricity became an everyday necessity for everyone starting with businesses like grocery stores and factories beginning to switch to electric lights in order to save energy! In 1912, the first automobile dealership opened up in Fulton when Charles Wirtz bought a Ford Model T from John Fitch near Main Street corner Depot Road (now State Route 4). In 1922, Third Lieutenant Harry Hensarling set up his chemical plant on what is now First Avenue corner Eighth Street (now Elmira Boulevard). By 1938, five large textile mills had been built along First Avenue between Elmira Boulevard and Park Drive; these plants produced materials such as cloth diapers and flooring for many homes across America during the 1930s-40s boom period known as “the Great Depression”! In 1951-1952, bulldozers demolished all but three buildings at what is now Main Street corner Depot Road on orders from Mayor Julius Erving due to concerns about fire danger created by asbestos used at some of these mills! Just over 50 years later (2013), demolition has resumed at two of these remaining mills while two more are currently under construction! It seems that despite fears of possible fires or explosions due to sequential failures of asbestos insulation over time leading to decreased fire resistance over time – no one has yet learned how best not to demolitionize them ever again so we can enjoy our peaceful little town once again 🙂 Today there are only few remnants left standing from those days when everything came directly from local farm fields into our homes! Some streets still retain their original namesakes: Main Street follows its original path eastward through downtown before turning northward towards Depot Road; Seventh Avenue becomes North Broadway after crossing Depot Road; Commercial Drive flows eastward past Union Station before becoming West Broadway opposite Elmira High School which remains open today as part of Ithaca College’s campus infrastructure; old Community Development block numbers like “711” have been lost among recent development projects going around corners onto new blocks number like Elmira Boulevard within minutes walking distance nowadays where most residents currently live!!! What an amazing history lesson weaved into our everyday lives!!!
