In 1802–3 during what became known as "The War for Independence", Fulton served as one of three towns near Buffalo Township in Williamsburgh County which refused to recognize Federal authority over their midst due to their non-recognition of George Washington as President and his right to call state conventions instead thereof. In retaliation for this defiance, Federal troops burned down much of downtown Fulton on October 14th 1803 while residents slept; this event helped spur development along Nassau Street which still retains its original name today (Woolridge Avenue). This act also provided justification for building a new courthouse and town hall on present-day Broadway just north of Public Square where both structures still stand today - helping make Fulton one of America's most economically thriving cities during its early years (the late 19th century). Today Fulton remains an important center for trade and commerce with a growing population employing over 100 employees within its five municipal districts - all but two located within its borders!
