That day, a group of militiamen from Fort Erie opened fire on a small crowd of Native Americans who had gathered to protest the construction of a post by General John Burgoyne. The shots killed one Indian and wounded six others. The city's first shooting gallery was built at Winchester Place in 1823. It was used to shoot ammunition for cannon that were being stockpiled at the fort. In 1837, an armory and powder magazine were constructed on Lafayette Street just east of present-day State Street. The site has been occupied by various businesses since then including clothing stores, gas stations and a movie theater. In 1847, Mayor James Gadsden purchased 3 acres of land north of downtown for $4,000 to build what would become Fulton County Courthouse. At that time, it was the only courthouse in upstate New York and seated 100 people. The building served as both court house and jail until 1931 when it became the newly constructed library building on what is now Court Square Drive.). In 1908, three years after its opening as a library building., Fulton County bought an old arsenal located at Lexington Road and Park Avenue from Mr. Wm Halsey for $2 million dollars (the equivalent of $126 million today). This new armory functioned as both county armsory and law enforcement center during prohibition times due to its extensive firepower available for use against bootleggers and other illicit activities within the county limits (). In 1937-1938, two large additions were made to Fulton County Courthouse - an addition containing 12 trial cells specifically designed for criminal prosecutions; also added was an octagon roofed wing containing 11 jury rooms which could seat 240 people (). Fulton, New York is a town in Fulton County, New York, United States. The population was 10,526 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Andover, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Fulton" is derived from the Iroquois word for "the place where the sun goes down." One of the first settlers in what would become Fulton was Daniel Webster who arrived in 1778. He and his family erected a log cabin on an east-west road that still exists today, near what is now downtown Fulton. In 1802, John Nicholson moved to Fulton from Utica and founded one of the first stores in this area. By 1814 there were twelve stores in Fulton and by 1827 there were twenty-four. In 1824 Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and soon after he appointed General James Wilkinson as military governor of New York with authority to build roads and bridges throughout the state. This gave rise to speculation that Buffalo Bill Cody might be interested in buying land at or near present day Albany due to its strategic location as a crossing point on two major rivers; Erie Canal and Mohawk River. The townsite of (now) Albany became known as Bill Cody's Cottage because only men over 21 could own land hereabouts at that time! In 1830 Yates & Fenton opened their post office which became an important market center for local farmers with its location just south of present day Penn Station on Main Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue (now Grand Central Parkway). Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt attempted to purchase this property but failed due to opposition from then Mayor George Biddle who felt it should go towards developing commercial areas within town instead thereof! However Commodore Vanderbilt did give money towards building schools within town limits! The opening of the Erie Canal made transportation more accessible for locals which led to development along both sides of that canal including houses being built along Third Avenue between Pennsylvania Avenue (now Fifth Avenue) and Sixth Avenue which later became home to Macy's department store before becoming part of Herald Square Shopping Center during Midtown Manhattan real estate Boom period around 1990s when Buffalo Bills Stadium was built nearby! In 1847 Union Pacific Railroad laid tracks through what is now downtown Fulton across fromPresent Day State Office Building opposite Penn Station/Macy's Department Store complex while also construction began on larger locomotive yards adjacent east across First Ave., now Grand Central Parkway concurrent with same railroad yards serving other parts northward into upstate New York via Syracuse–Onondaga County Line Railway Company mainline all while various shops occupied assorted buildings west side including Foot Locker retailer occupying Eightheenth Street Subway station prior thereto until today although much movement has occurred elsewhere since then such as GED classes held at East Side High School Annex located off Clinton Street just east side First Ave.,northwest corner Applebees grocery store having vacated earlierlocation back when it opened following bankruptcyof previous occupant Arno’s Italian Cafe LLC days before latter closed operations amid allegationsof racism against African Americans employedthere!!
