Fulton is a city in Fulton County, New York, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The name "Fulton" comes from John Fulton, one of the first white men to settle the area in 1795. The city was named after John Fulton and his wife Elizabethtown (later renamed Elmira). The village of Elizabethtown was located on what is now State Route 471 south of town. After being removed from the original boundaries by virtue of its location within Albany County, New York following the 1824 Census, Elizabethtown again came within Fulton's limits as part of an 1831 boundary change that also included present-day Westchester County. In 1837, Theodore Roosevelt visited Fulton and recommended it for incorporation into New York as a town because its location makes it easy to get water supplies from Lake Ontario and other sources. On December 12, 1785, the two brothers signed a deed for 640 acres (248 hectares) of land west of present-day Albany to create the town of Marcy on the Hudson River; this town traces its roots back to early Dutch settlers who had arrive in 1623 along with French Huguenots looking for refuge from religious persecution in France. On October 5th, 1824, Marcy celebrated its incorporation into the United States as a municipality when delegates from seven different towns met at Marcy Hall to debate proposed changes that would make Albany more populous and powerful within American society; these changes included annexing nearly all of western Albany including present day Auburn and White Plains which then formed the village of Schenectady while also annexing much of eastern Albany joining with former Town Of Troy making it current day Rochester). After years spent battling against legal challenges brought about by Livingston County’s refusal to recognizeMarcy’s incorporation as an official “village” within their borders despite overwhelming voter support throughout most of 2018-2019 township officials finally reached an agreement with county officials last week allowing annexed areas such as Auburn/White Plains & Schenectady under jurisdiction ofRochester—the only village currently recognized as an official partcipant w/o any resistance from Livingston County authorities! This provides significant relief for residents living east OFSchenectady & west OFAuburn thus solving some long standing community issues specifically around water access (& school crossing locations)
