The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. The name Freeport comes from French "Freetown". In 1814, when the United States acquired much of Canada through the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution, Freeport became part of U.S. Ontario Territory and remained so until 1959 when it became a separate municipality within Erie County. The start of what would become mining and farming activity here began with two early settlers, Pieter Jacobszoon and Hendrick van Swaay, who arrived in 1624 to prospect for minerals near present-day Freeport beach on Lake Ontario. Naming their new community after themselves – Freetown – they quickly realized that this location would be ideal for both because it had plenty of water resources as well as an sandy beach that could accommodate ships coming into or departing from Great Lakes ports like Niagara Falls and Buffalo.
