Freeport is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,055 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1812 by Nicholas Freeport and his wife Anna Larkin as a post office on the east side of the Niagara River. The first Postmaster General of New York, Ezra Stiles, certified that it would be an ideal site for a mail station because of its easy access to water supplies and its location next to two large salt works operated by Andrew Carnegie and John D Rockefeller. In 1827, Freeport became a county seat when Erie County was created from portions of Ontario County. In 1881, Freeport became one of twelve towns located within the new city of Buffalo. The city annexed all but three of Freeport's Village Square blocks in 1886 and 1888; however, the last block remained unannexed until after World War II when it was annexed into Buffalo proper as part of the municipal boundaries adjustment process following Buffalo's incorporation as an independent city in 1903. After years during which coal mining dominated local economy, freeport began to experience increased business opportunities with asbestos processing starting in the early 1970s followed by other manufacturing sectors over time including paper products (from pulp mills), auto parts (from Ford Motor Company) and now seafood products due to growing demand from Asia
