Freeport is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Freeport Iron and Steel Company was founded in 1875 by Edward Freeport Sr. and his brother, George Freeport. In 1902, the company merged with the Utica-Rome Railroad to form the Erie Railroad. In 1926, the company merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation to become Freeport Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The name change came about because both companies were based in Buffalo and called their plant "Bethlehem." The original steel works were located on Canandaigua Creek just north of town along what is now US 20/26A (formerly HWY 10). After World War II ended and demand for steel decreased due to technological advances, production shifted to newly built facilities in nearby Tonawanda and Salamanca. However, after a fire destroyed some of those plants in 1979, allsteel returned to Freeport under new ownership in 1984–1985 with plans to reopen canneries on Long Island Sound as well as an electric locomotive factory on Niagara Falls Boulevard outside town limits that never materialized due to economic reasons. In 1996–1997, local officials successfully petitioned then-President Clinton to approve development of an airport within town limits – which would have led to increased trade and tourism activities around the milltown while also creating jobs for locals. That airport project never happened; however, Fréport has seen significant growth over recent decades thanks largely to its unique location:adjacent Lake Ontario lies at its doorstep making it easily accessible by plane or boat for residents throughout upstate New York as well as Illinois and Canada

Freeport is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Long Island City–South Nyack–Norwalk, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Freeport were Dutch colonists who landed there in 1624. The area then belonged to the Manor of Hempstead and was one of several small villages within the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1664, the English purchased Freeport from the Dutch for 1 £4 worth of goods and imported 50 men to begin developing it as an English settlement. In 1715, George Washington leased Freeport from Nicholas-Jacques Conte for $320 per year with a right to renewal every 5 years at $33 per acre (1/6th). On February 3, 1716, Congress awarded Mr. Washington this patent for "the land hereunto belonging situate." The grant allowed Mr. Washington to build a house and establish himself as proprietor; it also provided that "no person other than hee who shall have bought or leasesholdt hime in fee simple" may inhabit any part of his estate without his consent. In 1776 during the Revolutionary War, British forces burned down Mr. Washington's house and took all his possessions but he escaped injury thanks largely to friendly relations with local civilians living in nearby Hempstead Village which had been spared by British forces. After independence was granted in November 1783, Freeport became an incorporated town on December 12th following ratification by residents via referendum held two days later (the same day as General James Clinton's celebrated victory over George Washington at Saratoga)). At its incorporation proceedings president David Levy expressed hope that " widened commerce will bring hither more nimble mechanics and others able artisans." In 1827freeport annexed new settlements around Norwalk including Seaford(now Sayville) and Westport(now Groton). These annexations increased Freeport's population size by approximately 100%. The Panic of 1893 began when investments went bad in Buffalo Bayou oil fields near Houston TX which created a crash across America causing many companies such as Standard Oil Trust headquartered in New York City te fall into bankruptcy trusts reducing their liability under state law ensuring their assets were not seized by creditors However some businesses such as influential whaling ships owners gained from these reductions including freeport company captain John Jacob Astor whose ship Nantucket caught fire off shore while being towed back upriver after being wrecked off Long Island she lost her entire crew but only 6 men died due to smoke inhalation however this caused much public outcry against insurance companies caused particularlyStandard Copper Mines head Quaker John Dolan who responded with a campaign promising donations totaling $2 million towards building oasisboats designed specifically for use offshore cleaning up distressed ports) free people living on Staten island also benefited handsomely most notably those owning slaves freed they received deeds entitling them to 300 acres (12 hectares) each starting at 20 cents an acre plus improvements such as sheltering them until they could purchase their freedom seeing this benefit they voted overwhelmingly in favor reincorporating into Nassau county

By 1907, Freeport had 1,500 residents and was the second-largest city in the New York metropolitan area. In 1923, Freeport merged with neighboring Port Jefferson to form the current city of Freeport.
