The original name of the town was Freeport on the north side of the river Androscoggin The first settlers were men who arrived in 1796 from Rhode Island and named their new community after themselves – Freeport on the Androscoggin River. In 1824, a post office was established at Freeport and remained in operation until 1902. In 1847, James Tompkins bought land adjacent to present-day Freeport for $10 per acre (2 km²). He named his new town Tompkinsville after himself. In 1870, he donated some of his land to Monroe County for use as a township. The first settler in Tompkinsville was Hiram Bogan. His farm included a mill which still remains in use today; it produced flour and other goods until 1865 when it became an electric power plant In 1881, Phebe Snively organized her sisters into an agricultural society to improve their crops and raise money for school supplies for their underage siblings living with them on their father's farmsteads near Georgetown Landing on Rensselaer Creek. This group also founded what would become Albany Rural School District No. 2

The town of Freeport, New York was established in 1825 by the merger of two other towns, Freeport and Naugatuck. The first store opened in 1827 and the first post office was established in 1830.
