The first gunslingers who came to Freeport were settlers from Ohio and Indiana. They brought their firearms with them and started compiling statistics on how many people were killed by Indians or other predators with bows and arrows. It was around this time that some locals realized that they needed something better than tomahawks, spears, or swords to defend themselves against potential attackers. So they began using guns to take aim at targets farther away than they could with their traditional weapons. This gave rise to the idea of shooting hoops from a distance – which quickly became one of the most popular forms of entertainment in Freeport! In 1865, the US Navy built a naval base at Freeport to store supplies for troops fighting in the Civil War. The Naval Base remained active until 1898 when it was closed down due to budget cuts by President McKinley. In 1907, a steel mill was built inFreeport by J P Morgan & Company. It remains one of the largest steel mills in New York State today. In 1915, World War I began and Freeport became an important munitions manufacturing center because of its location at the mouth of Hudson Bay on the East Coast of Canada. The war produced many casualties including more than 1,200 local citizens killed during military raids into villages along their shores during 1916-1917 called ""The Great Raids"" . Rifle shipments increased from around $1 million per year during World War I to $14 million by 1922 due to advances made in rifle technology since that time

In 1827, the US$2 million purchase of land at Freeport allowed for the town's incorporation as a city under New York state law. The company continued to operate out of Freeport until 1898, when it merged with other companies in what is now Buffalo, New York
