Today, many businesses located in Freeport continue to be important economic engines within the community: Successful local farmers produce corn, wheat, soybeans, potatoes, apples (the most popular variety), eggs (and other grocery items) and dairy products; there are several breweries; one has been open continuously since 1919; fishing is an important source of income for locals along with crabbing off points along Lake Ontario The town of Freeport was incorporated on March 5th 1868 by Drury Hennepin Avester & Wm Grosvenor Cushing under the name of “Newburgh” after then-Governor George Washington Carver who donated land for incorporation purposes On November 3rd 1886 Jno Pratt bought 640 acres east of present day Main Street which included most of what would become current south side of town including what now goes by names like Church Road/Seminary Road/School House Road etc...Mr Pratt built a sawmill on this property which became known as The Old Mill because it still stands today
