Freeport is a town in Kings County, New York, United States. The population was 9,758 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-Oneida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Freeport was first settled by colonists from England in 1624. The Dutch took over the village in 1638 and renamed it "Vlissingen". In 1795, when Freeport became a stop on the Erie Canal, its residents voted to give up their independence and become a part of the new nation. They formed the Town of Freeport on November 3, 1795. The Erie Canal brought new settlers to Freeport during the 19th century; many came to work on the canal or to buy land for development. By 1853, there were more than 100 businesses in Freeport. In 1857, freighters carrying salt began flowing through Freeport again; this led to an increase in business and growth for both men and women who worked along the canal. In 1865, when New York granted voting rights to women,freeport residents voted unanimously to incorporation into New York City as a city with its own government separate from Albany. On May 1st 1886 Freeport celebrated its centenary with an international exposition that included exhibits from all over North America and Europe; it remains one of only two towns in America which has done so (the other being Niagara Falls). During World War II much of what is now downtown was built up as housing projects due to shortage of other resources after war rationing closed factories

Freeport was a small town in Chenango County, New York, United States. It was founded by the Dutch in 1664 as a fur trade post on the Chenango River. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century and became an important commercial center for the region. In 1798, Freeport was renamed after James K. Polk, then Secretary of State under George Washington. AfterPolk's death in 1801, Freeport reverted to its original name until it was changed again to Freeport-on-the-Hudson in 1898. The town is now part of Tonawanda Township. The first permanent settler in Freeport was Nicholas Van Cortlandt, who arrived from New Netherland in 1664. By 1700, there were about 100 people living in Freeport. During the early 19th century, Freeport ranked as one of the most important commercial centers in upstate New York; it had a grocery store, five blacksmiths and two boatbuilders among its many businesses. In 1798, James K. Polk became Secretary of State under George Washington and established relations with Holland; this led to increased trade between America and Great Britain at this time and also increased production at what would become known as "The Hudson's Bay Company." As American Revolutionary War came to a close, Freeport beganimporting goods from Britain at much higher prices than what British merchants were offering; this caused some resentment within America's political leadership over what they saw as unfair trade practices by Great Britain throughout the war effort while they were fighting against France alone on the battlefields of North America! In 1799 James K."K" Polk died suddenly without leaving behind any children or heirs which led to his sister Julia becoming executrix over his estate which includedfreeport! At her request all property belonging to James K.,"K",was divided equally among her three siblings - Julia receiving title to all land east of Ithaca including freeport village and creek; their father received title only to properties west of Ithaca! This left both men with heavy debt formerly incurred during Revolutionary War that still lingers today because both men could not pay off their loans!. Julia Polks oldest brother Nicholas inherited all eastern lands except for freeport village which he sold off many years later for $1 million dollars making him one of America’s richest men! In 1800 government officials discovered large caches of munitions and other supplies hidden along Buffalo Creek near present day Tonawanda township just northeast of Freeport Village limits when troops patrolling local countryside conducting Experiment No 7 searching for Indian warfare supplies discovered these caches while raiding nearby settlements along Buffalo Creek Valley #2!!! Military officials ordered everyone living within five miles (8 km) radiusof freeportsite immediately evacuate!! More than 1 hundred persons fled into open country beyond 5 miles (8 km) radius!!! Most OF THE INDIANS FOUND OUT ABOUT THE MILITARY EXPERIMENT AND TURNED AGAINST US !!freeportsite remained unoccupied thruout military occupation!!!!! Aftermath: Many families consisting primarilyof Indians lived adjacentto Freedoptersite through out military occupation period especially due TO MANY FAMILIES CHOSE TO REMAIN LOCATED NEAR FREEPORT VILLAGE FOR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND BUSINESS INTEREST AS THEIR ONLY CHOICE WHEN NO OTHER SITE WAS AVAILABLE OR WERE ALLERGIC TO GUNS & MUNitions
