In 1898, when numerous small businesses closed due to lack of customers during an economic slump that hit all communities along Pennsylvania Avenue during that time period, Freeport organized its own community association which still governs most aspects of life within the community today - including elections for Village Councilors as well as zoning ordinances for select business areas withinFreeport village limits which have been modified many times since then!

On December 12, 1824, the first company of freemen who had sailed from Freeport, New York founded a new town on the site. The town was named after Commodore John Stevens and his ship, the USS Constitution. The town's first store was built in 1825 and its first settler was Abram Hobbs. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 it had a population of 350 people. In 1834, the Town Board voted to rename Freeport to Port Jefferson because of its proximity to New York City. The name stuck and the town continued to grow until it had a population of 8,000 people by 1860.
