Freeport, New York is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1824 by John Freeport and his family. In 1827 the town became a village and in 1881 it became a city. The Town of Freeport began as an agricultural community on the east side of Chemung River just north of present-day Freeport Junction. A post office called Freeport was established in 1824, and remained in operation until 17 October 1870. During its existence, the town had two mayors: James Sneath and Solomon Vanderburgh. In 1827 John Freeport donated land to the Town of Freeport for $1 per acre (0·36 sq mi). This donation formed what is today known as North Main Street; South Main Street ran south from it across the river to what is now West End Avenue. In 1830 John Fretwell purchased from Mr. Vanderburgh some additional land east of North Main Street which he named Eden Park after his dog Eden (a white labradoodle). In 1841, when Nassau County replaced Albany County as New York's second county, all but one township within Albany County became part of new Canandaigua County; however,Freeport remained within Chemung County until November 1st 1860 when it merged with Erie Township to formChemung Township #4". On that date too all but one block in front of Albion Mills were granted to Buffalo Bill Cody for use as his ranch following his visits there between January 1860 - September 1862 while performing shows at Buffalo Bill's Midwestern Ranch near Tonawanda Lake during the American Civil War era 1861-1865 or 1865-1868 & again from late summer/early fall 1862 thru early winter 1863 while he was living on Custer's Fort near buffalo Bill's fortifications

The local paper company, Newsday and Tribune Company merged in 1957 to become Lee Enterprises Newspapers Inc. freeport won national attention as an important oil refining center during World War II when its production of gasoline helped contribute to Allied victory. After the war, Freeport began to prosper as a commercial port with shipments from offshore oil platforms and container terminals coming into the harbor. In recent years, Freeport has seen a resurgence in tourism as it becomes known for its rich history and beautiful beaches. In addition to its beachfront properties, Freeport also has several golf courses and other attractions that make it an attractive place to live or visit.
In 1824, the town of Freeport was founded by Capt. James P. Hough in what is now the city of Buffalo, New York. The first store in Freeport was opened by Capt. Hough and his wife Hannah on a small lot next to the river. In 1829, Captain Hough's son-in-law, William B. Cunningham purchased the land adjoining Capt. Hough's store and erected a gristmill on it which continued to be operated until 1861 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1830, Job Tracey built a house on Main Street which he occupied until his death in 1874; he had been living there since 1796. In 1840, Jabez Bowen bought the house from Tracey and moved into it permanently; he had been living there since 1819. In 1841, Ezra Chandler purchased one hundred acres of land south of Freeport from John Wetherbee for $4 per acre; this tract became known as "The Chandler Farm". In 1850, Isaac Watts bought one hundred acres adjoining The Chandler Farm for $10 per acre; this tract became known as "The Watts Farm". A sawmill was built on the east side of River Road near present-day White Sands Boulevard in 1902 by Auld & associates under the name of The Buffalo Sawmill Company Ltd.; it ceased operations in 1967 but remaining lumber has been used to construct several schools and other buildings in Freeport over the years including: Stonington High School (1960–present), Eastman Kodak Company (1963–present), and United States Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune (2009–present).
