Fredonia was a small town in the Appalaches of New York State, United States. It is located in Chenango County and is part of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Reverend Amos Soper organized a Sunday School in Fredonia in 1865, which continues to operate to this day as one of New York's leading religious institutions. In 1889-90 residents voted not to annex into Syracuse because they felt that their community would be better off as an independent village with its own governance structure and social services available should Syracuse expand too rapidly into their area. On January 14, 1903, after more than two years of negotiations between local officials and representatives from Syracuse NY over annexation into nearby cities such as Oneonta (then Johnson City) or Auburn (then Utica), Fredonia incorporation finally happened with effective date November 3rd due largely to financial contributions from Rev Amos Soper who also served as mayor from 1918-1920 The original downtown commercial district included about 25 businesses including several banks/finance firms along 7th Avenue NW; 5 restaurants/bars; 2 grocery stores; 1 dry goods store; 2 newsstands; 1 post office - all within walking distance of each other providing access to both markets and transportation options The current downtown district has been developed over time by developers who have added several thousand square feet of high-end commercial space including bars/restaurants/stores such as Macy’s etc., offices including some large law firms etc., while leaving much of the historic district undeveloped
