Fredonia, NY is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome-Schenectady, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Fredonia" was given to the village after General George Washington's Headquarters were located there while he led his army through Canada during the War for Independence (1775-1781). The George Washington Bridge crosses over Mohawk River into New York City at Fredonia; this bridge has been called one of America's most beautiful landmarks since it opened in 1903. About half way across from Manhattan proper is Fordham University; founded by Bishop George Lawlor Maguire and completed in 1931 as one of President Franklin D Roosevelt's public universities, Fordham now houses some 15 colleges and schools with more than 100 research programs covering all aspects of education

By World War IIFredony had recovered slightly but remained struggling economically compared with other municipalities within New York State. Additionally, racial tensions continued to simmer until World War II ended with no clear victor on either side; instead there were numerous skirmishes across much of America involving different ethnicity groups
