Fredonia is a small town in the Catskills of New York. It was formed from the merger of two other towns, Westchester and Mohawk, in 1874. The name Fredonia is derived from the Dutch word for "farm." The population of Fredonia was 9,814 at the 2000 census. The first settler in what is now Fredonia was Nicholas de Vries, who arrived in 1664. He founded a farm on land that he purchased from the Indians. In 1765, John Purdy settled here and built a log cabin which still stands today. In 1801, Samuel Morse (the father of Morse Code) moved to Fredonia and started a tannery. On July 4th, 1811, Daniel Webster sold his interest in this tannery to George Stephenson for $2,500. In 1870, the railroad came to Fredonia and soon there were numerous stores and businesses lining Main Street. One such business was Honese's grocery store which continues to operate today as an independently owned business with over 100 years of history! The current spelling of the town's name isFredonia because it was officially changed by deed poll on December 1st, 1916! During World War II many residents enlisted in the armed forces and many military barracks were built here including Camp Blanding (now Fort Drum), which served as headquarters for both Army Rangers and Air Force units during World War II! After the war ended many jobs left Frederickton including white-collar work such as sales clerks at local department stores or factory jobs doing things like assembling widgets or making radios! However some businesses did continue to thrive including CarpetCoaster Inc., who has been open since 1955; NoodleBakery Inc., who opened their first store in 1957; BalloonHaven Inc., who opened their first store in 1960;and IceCreamShoppe & Treats Inc., who opened their first store in 1965!

Fredonia is located on the Mohawk River and shares boundaries with the towns of Canandaigua and Rome. The first settler in Fredonia was John Smith in 1785. The town's current name is derived from Revolutionary War General George Washington's Camp Frederick on the Mohawk River. Albany post office opened in 1802 and was renamed Fredonia in 1865 after President Abraham Lincoln's visit to Fredonia that year. In 1881, the Erie Railroad built a line through the community connecting it with Buffalo, New York. Due to its location on the river,Fredonia underwent rapid growth during its early years as a seaport; by 1860 it had become one of America’s largest inland ports thanks to extensive dredging operations authorized by then-President Andrew Johnson during his administration. But as shipping boomed and new industry emerged in Erie’s wake—including shipbuilding and steel production—fredonians began to lose their share of the economic pie; by 1970 they constituted just 3 percent of their total population size. Nevertheless, due largely to efforts spearheaded by downtown business leaders such as banker Daniel Dennett and real estate developer Harry Snyder (son of Alfred Snyder),Fentonville has continued to grow steadily since its incorporation into city limits in 1967 “to take full advantage of all opportunities which Erie has for developing Fortonville….the goal being not simply annexation but also comprehensive transformation of our community into an economically vibrant destination for bothresidential development [and] commercial enterprise." Today Fentonville boasts more than 2 dozen businesses including restaurants, movie theaters and retailers along with three large public works complexes: a library/museum complex containing over 40 buildings dating back to 1875 (the oldest still operating library west of Pennsylvania), an auto dealership/repair garage/showroom complex (one of only two remaining Eastern European-owned dealerships open within this type of facility) and an ice rink providing indoor hockey play for up to 400 people annually – making it one of North America’s most popular tourist destinations while maintaining significant community involvement throughout all phases In late 2006 Fentonville announced plans for a major redevelopment project designed around creating what would become its centerpiece – an $850 million mixed-use development anchored by two massive glass towers rising above Interstate 490 directly across from local shopping Center One Stop mall that would include hotel rooms units offices The project faced opposition from some residents who felt they had been shortchanged when earlier versions thereof proposed much larger developments adjacent or incorporating One Stop mall instead Nonetheless following heated debate between developers themselves as well as city officials over several months final approval was given subjecting particular concerns about traffic congestion surrounding I-490 access points however initial renderings released appear unlikely ever materialize
