Fredonia, New York was founded in 1824. It is the oldest town in upstate New York and is located on the Mohawk River. The town was named for General James Fredon, who fought in the American Revolutionary War. In 1827, Frederick Douglass moved to Fredonia from Rochester, New York and became a leader of black abolitionism. In 1847, the first school in Fredonia opened with 30 students. In 1865, a post office was established in Fredonia and it remained open until 1955. The first store in Fredonia was built by Nathan Haggerty and his brother-in-law Jacob Riis. In 1872, Fenton Burnham developed a large tract of land north of the Mohawk River west of downtownFredonia. This area became known as Burnham Heights and has been occupied by families since then. In 1925, Frederica Wilson became the first female Mayor of Fredonia after winning an election against incumbent John Loughlin Jr.. She served until her death in 1951. During her time as Mayor she spearheaded many projects such as building new roads and libraries within the city limits; creating a recreation center; establishing streetlights throughout the city; renovating schools; adding parkland to the city Limits;and increasing funding for public education through programs such as Head Start/Day Careinderization In 1969, Drs Moses Feldman and Stanton Weiser opened what would become one of Fredonia's most iconic businesses - Weiser's Market - which remains open today (since 1996) serving local residents fresh produce including fruits & vegetables, meat products (poultry & bacon), eggs & dairy products along with baked goods & ice cream from their 23th floor truck stop on State Road 7 West across from City Hall
