Fredonia is a town in Genesee County, New York, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after General George Washington's home county in Virginia. The first European settlers in what is now Fredonia were French Canadians who arrived around 1724. They founded a post office and built a log cabin near the present day intersection of State Route 283 and Indian Road. A millstream called the "Creek" supplied power to their homes for grinding flour from cornstalks which they also used to make bread and other goods. In 1814, when Adriel Dodge bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land west of present-day Fredonia from Moses Fishkill, he named it "Dodgeville". In 1836, when John Davenport purchased 1,200 acres (460 hectares) east of present-day Frederickonia from Samuel Morse & Company for $8 per acre (0.40 per square kilometer), he renamed it "Davenportville". In 1846 David Fenton bought 515 acres (217 hectares) south of present-day Fredonia from Abraham Hoffmeyer for $10 per acre (0.60 per square kilometer). He sold it to John Geddes in 1865 for $2 an acre ($0.08 per square meter). In 1870s and 1880s, mills were built along State Route 283 between Saratoga and Rochester; these mills produced flour, yarn, cotton fiber and lumber products such as posts and piers among others. By 1902 there were 10 businesses inFredonia with a payroll totaling $1 million (.0027 million USD). In 1909 there was one store operating out of five buildings that had been erected on Main Street since 1800 under the name "Fulton's Store". During World War II most manufacturing activity ceased except for some production at the local military plant; however some light industry continued including riverboatbuilding until 1945 when all boats were converted into submarines by Ford Motor Company producing Aquia Cutters which became America's first series production boatbuilders before being replaced by Navistar Boatbuilders Inc.. Fredonia is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It has been Village of Fredonia since 1898 and is part of the Farmingdale-East Hampton–Norwalk Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was first settled in 1796 by settlers from Connecticut. The name means "old fort" or "settlement on a trading post." In 1825, the village became an incorporated town. Fredonia had its peak population in 1951 when it had 2,717 residents. From then until 1998, the town's population declined each year by about 10%. In 1998, the town voted to become an unincorporated community again and keep its name (although it ceased to be governed by municipal officials). Today, Fredonia is one of several villages that make up Farmingdale-East Hampton-Norwalk which has a total area of . Fredonia is located at (40.919992), just east of East Hampton and west of Norwalk. The village borders Onondaga County to the north and west; Westchester County to the south; and Suffolk County to the east.
