Fredonia, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 8,269 at the 2010 census. Fredonia was founded in 1827 by George Stephenson and others as the towns of Canandaigua and Fredonia on the Niagara River. It became a village in 1868 and then a town in 1898. Frederick John Augustus Stover was mayor from 1907 to 1912 and 1916 to 1918. The first post office opened in Fredonia on July 1, 1827.
Fredonia was a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. It was located on the south bank of the Susquehanna River, east of Binghamton. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Fredonia were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. They named the area "Tinicum", after their home province of Holland. The first settler in present-day Fredonia was John Andréessen in 1797. A year later he and his brother took up land near what is now Main Street and First Avenue. In 1814, Andréessen built a tavern on what is now Second Avenue and Main Street. In 1825, George Washington Potter moved from Albany to become the postmaster of Chenango County and started an Odd Fellows Temperance Society there. He also got involved with politics and became an advocate for Indian rights. In 1829, he donated land to build a school for students in present-day Fredonia Township which would eventually become Mahoning Valley State University (MVSU). In 1830, the Erie Canal opened up new trade routes between Buffalo and Pittsburgh through Chenango County and increased agricultural production; this led to more people moving into the area around Fredonia over time. The population rose rapidly during this time as farmsteads were destroyed by natural disasters such as floods or fire; roads were not built until after 1840 because transportation was expensive then. A store called The Mercantile opened on Third Street west ofpresent-day Main Street in 1854 which served as a stopping place for wagons transporting goods downriver from Buffalo to Pittsburgh along the Erie Canal network
