He arrived in 1792 from Hamburg and started farming on what is now known as Wesselman Road near where it meets Main Street today. Wesselman's son Johann Baptiste built a blacksmith shop on what is now Elm Street in 1807-08 to help support his family after he acquired land north of present day Elm Street and east of First Avenue (now called Park Ave.). As business grew around this location, other entrepreneurs soon followed suit: Nicholas Drexel opened a gristmill on First Avenue in 1810; John Brougham erected a sawmill on Main Street in 1811; George Pohl built a flour mill on Center Road east of First Avenue in 1812; Elias Green built two houses at Fourth and Delaware Streets about three years later; Jacob Scherrer established an ice cream stand at Third and Delaware Streets about eighteen months later; Thaddeus Schlosser opened a bakery at Third and Main Streets about February 6th, 1830 After these early pioneers came others who helped shape Fredonia into the thriving community it has become today: Luther Strobel purchased land northeast corner 4th streets & 2nd avenue from Nicholas Drexel circa 1830-31 for use as farmland; Augustus Kelley mortgaged his farm south side First avenue to th Addison Kelley family circa 1840-41 for $500 ; John Cramer leased land east side First avenue from Augustus Kelley circa 1850-51 for $1 per year ; Hermann Kapp organized farmers' markets throughout central/western NY beginning in 1860 In1896 there were only 30 Berliners living here compared to over 8000 people living outside German enclaves across America at that time!
