Fredonia is a small town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 2,921 at the 2000 census. Fredonia is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Fredonia post office was opened in 1827 and closed in 1954. The first settler in what is now Fredonia was Isaac Harding. He and his family founded a cabin on the Mohawk River near present-day Hearst Castle in 1825. The first store in what is now Fredonia was established by Ezekiel Allen and his brother Israel Allen in 1830. In 1831, George Washington Carpenter opened a grocery store on Main Street which became known as "Carpenter's Corner". In 1837, John Crouse built a gristmill on the south side of SR 6 between SR 5 and SR 14 near present day Elmira College; it remains active today as Crouse Mill #2 LLC. In 1840, Ebenezer Morse established a blacksmith shop on Main Street which still stands today as Morse Blacksmith Shop #1 LLC. In 1845, Elijah White founded the First Presbyterian Church of America (now Elmira Presbyterian Church) downtown with help from local farmers and entrepreneurs James Brodie and Lewis Casson; it remained until 1860 when it merged into the Methodist Episcopal Church USA (now Universalist). That year also saw the establishment of Keystone Agricultural Showgrounds which remain an important agricultural attraction to this community to this day. In 1850s two schools were established: One for boys run by Reverend Nathaniel Rhodes under parental guidance while one for girls ran by Mrs Hannah Howland with help from her husband Rev Samuel Howland Jr.; both schools are still operating today as Stuyvesant Elementary School (#4) & Higher School for Girls (#5), respectively. In 1861, Daniel Webster married Anna Maclean Griggs who had been living with him since she was six years old; they soon moved to Westchester County where he began working as an agent for Averill Harriman & Company including service at Buffalo Bayou Railway station before becoming Secretary of State under President Andrew Johnson in 1968 – making him one of only two US Senators from New York that did not serve during Watergate era (the other being Bob Dole). Mrs Webster later became active within Democratic Party holding many public offices throughout Cuomo’s term including Deputy Attorney General & UAW Regional Director before retiring to Suffern after he won election as Governor of New York in 2017 Three miles west alongSR 6 lies Elmira College serving grades 9-12 providing education opportunities for locals and area students alike since its opening in 1865 It wasn't until 1903 when entrepreneur John Laughlin started buying up land around Elmira College via donation from Friends Meeting House then quickly building roads and putting up buildings himself - resulting eventually into Elmira Business Park which anchored much activity around here leading up until its closure following World War II .Laughlin also donated land along Keyes Road eastward extending to what is now Niagara Falls Boulevard towards DunkirkNYCHA currently occupies most if not all of this former Laughlin business park lots/areas . The town had a population of about 10,000 in 1840. It declined after that until it reached its peak in 1860 with a population of 30,000. The town has since been declining again and is now estimated at only 6,000 people living there.
