Fredonia, New York is a small town located in the Catskills of upstate New York. The community was founded in 1846 by Hans and Anna Fenton, who named it for their father, Frederick Augustus Fenton. The town was first settled as a farming village on the east side of the Hudson River. In 1876, the US Post Office moved from Yonkers to Fredonia and the name was changed to its current form. In 1911, Fredonia became home to the world's first rifle range when it opened at nearby Saratoga Springs. Today, Fredonia hosts many gun shows and events each year including its own annual 4-day firearms trade show called "The Fredonia Show." The Gun Owners' Institute of America has also held events here since 1923. Today, Fredonia is a vibrant community with an active local economy that includes agriculture, manufacturing, retailing and services. Its businesses include two banks (one FDIC insured), two stores (one independently owned), four restaurants and one pub; three schools: one public school (grades K-12); one private daycare; two churches; and several residential subdivisions including a single-family house park complete with golf course which has been used as a filming location for dozens of movies over the years.

Fredonia, New York is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit this area were Dutch settlers in 1624. The name "Fredonia" means "land of Freds" in Swedish and it was anglicized to Fredericka in 1784. The community was first platted in 1820 by Captain John Fenton and William Brown of Albany as part of a large land grant for five hundred miles eastward from Utica on Lake Ontario which had been given to them by the British Crown as part of the Treaty of Paris after the American Revolution. Fenton named his tract "Fernalda." In 1827, two men named Willis erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street near present day Roscoe Avenue. They became known as the "Willis Cabin Boys." In 1829 another group of pioneers arrive from Schenectady and called themselves the "Pioneers." They built their own cabin about three miles northwest of present day Fredonia on high ground across frompresent day Erie Canal (now Mohawk River). This became known as Fort Niagara or simply Fort Niagara because no one knew where it actually was located until sometime after 1800 when Colonel George Washington's troops took possession during their Expedition against Canada under General William Howe. In 1830, George Armstrong Custer made an attempt to cross over into Canada throughFort Niagara but his party was unsuccessful and he returned home without striking any Canadian settlements or encountering any Aboriginal people. After this event most residents moved out west towards Buffalo while some continued living at Fort Niagara until 1840 when they abandoned it due to Indian attacks that year and began moving back east again towards their old homes near Motleytown Creek which are today known as Westchester County line south of Syracuse Airport . A post office called Fredonia opened in 1830 with Wm Halsey appointedFirst Postmaster On January 1st 1831 new mail service arrived at Fort Niagara with Mr Aiken being appointed Second Postmaster
