Fredonia is a small town in upstate New York, located on the east bank of the Chenango River. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fredonia-on-Hudson Valley Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a small community on what is now U.S. Route 9 south of present day Fredonia and west ofpresent day Honeoye Falls. On April 12, 1820, the first settler in what would become Fredonia was George Washington Thomson who arrived from Canada with his family and some friends to build a home on land that would later be owned by John D'Angelo Marshalls father-in-law, Nicholas Coles. In 1825, George Thomson's son Alexander Thomson erected a log cabin near present day Main Street which served as the first store in what would become Fredonia and became known as "Thompsonsville". In 1827, when Mohawk Trail connected Albany to Schenectady via Kingston upon Hudson, traders discovered an area rich in minerals including coal and gold along the Chenango River valley floor where they began mining for these resources and selling goods back to Albany merchants. This led to business growth for local entrepreneurs such as Nicholas Coles who developed mills that produced flour, cloth and other items until 1865 when production switched to munitions due to new technology developments during the Civil War era such as powered looms which allowed for increased quantities of fabric per hour than could be achieved using traditional methods like spinning wheels or hand looms In 1870s there were also founded two churches in Fredonia – one Congregational (later Methodist) (founded by Reverend James Caldwell), while another Baptist church was built soon afterwards (the latter still standing today). Fredericka School opened in 1876 which helped educate both boys and girls attending public schools throughout much of upstate New York . By 1900 there were over 170 businesses operating withinFredonia limits with a payroll value OF $5 million dollars .
