Fredonia, New York is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 3,681 at the 2010 census. Fredonia is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a history dating back to 1814 when it was called "Fulton". The first Europeans to visit what is now Fredonia were fur traders and missionaries who came from Poland in 1814 seeking converts to Christianity. In 1815, the United States Congress designated the area as part of Erie County and named it after George Washington Fulton, an American Revolutionary War soldier and member of the Erie Canal Commission. In 1824, John Waddell founded a settlement on Unadilla Creek in what is now Fredonia under the name "Waldo". He soon relocated his community to what is now Monroe because water supplies were not reliable there. There were only six houses in Waldo by 1830; however, by 1840 there were over 100 residents living in Waldo and surrounding villages including Monroe. In 1846, land comprising present day Fredonia was purchased from Jens Jensen for $1 million by James Biddle Fenton who renamed it "Binghamton" after his friend Andrew Bingham (the governor of Ohio). Binghamton became one of America's most prosperous towns with Manufacturing as its mainstay due to its location on Lake Ontario between Buffalo and Niagara Falls which made shipping goods available throughout much of North America along with its open-air markets that attracted farmers and merchants from all over East Central New York. During World War II many factories closed down but others such as that at Willow Run near where I-680 crossroads meets Route 9 produced munitions for the war effort including artillery shells used against Japan which led to some local communities being heavily bombed during this time period. After 1945 these industries gradually went closures or merged into new companies as technology progressed making manufacturing less important than ever before within our economy leading some people to term Fredonia "a ghost town." However developer Jim Flannery has resurrected parts of this lost industry with businesses like: Bob's Carpet & Loom Shop; Big Time Brewery; Empire Tire & Rubber; Moose Jaw Winery & Vineyards; Heritage Credit Union; Friends Aid For Hunger Relief Committee - currently providing groceries discounts for food pantries throughout Southern Ontario through their distribution network extending into Western New York via depots affiliated with various food banks located around Western NY.; [and] numerous other small businesses since he purchased property adjacent to I-680 just east of downtown Buffalo about 10 years ago! One popular tourist attraction in recent years has been The Frederick Opera House which opened up in 2006 adjacent to The Village Theater across from Elmira Correctional Facility serving as both a performing arts venue and educational facility teaching music appreciation and stage production techniques while also hosting events such as art shows Open Studios/Gallery hours are 8am-5pm daily except Thursdays when they're open 10am until 5pm
