Floral Park is a small town in the Hudson Valley region of New York City. The community was founded in 1853 by Colonel Augustus Francis Selfridge, who purchased 7 acres of land east of Elmhurst Road for $4 per acre. The name "Floral Park" was chosen because it was then one of the most expensive areas to buy real estate in New York City. The first settlers in Floral Park were families from Putnam County, Connecticut. In 1853, Augustus F. Selfridge and his wife Elizabeth moved from Hartford, Connecticut to purchase 7 acres of land east of Elmhurst Road for $4 per acre. (Selfridge would later become president and CEO of Macy's Inc.). They named their new community Floral Park after their daughter's favorite flower, the lily of the valley. It wasn't until 1865 that Floral Park had its own post office; at that time it consisted only of a room on First Avenue between 82nd and 83rd Streets.) In 1876, John Wistar erected what is now the largest frame house in Floral Park; this large brick structure remained standing until 1912 when it was replaced by a much smaller variant known as the Wistar House Museum which still stands today on Third Avenue between 92nd and 93rd Streets. On July 3, 1898, during World War I, Floral Park became part of the United States military zone surrounding Manhattan; this area included all or part of five municipalities located east or north thereof: Bronxville (now Valhalla), Canarsie/East Harlem/Hudson Heights (then Westchester County), Farmingdale (now North Hyde Park), and Riverside Gardens/Mount Kisco (now Rockland County). During World War II, FloralPark reverted back to its civilian status with boundaries unchanged save for an addition to its south boundary which served as Fort George Gillett Army Airfield; this airfield became operational during 1943-1945 asFort Worth Army Air Field. In 1955-1956,Donna Reed opened her first restaurant called Donny & Dee's Diner adjacent to her mother's home on Seventeenth Street between 36th and 37th Avenues - this popular spot quickly gained national attention thanks to its innovative decorating which featured everything from psychedelic artwork to detailed potted plants (). Donna Reed would later open another restaurant called Donny & Dee's Diner on Eighth Avenue between 46th and 47th Streets before retiring from business in 2005 (). In 2018-2019 Donnie & Dee's Diner reopened under new ownership as The Delta Belle Calligaris
In 1875, Floral Park was opened to the public as a park in the heart of Manhattan. The first acreage was donated by Major General Amos Kendall and it comprised of now-demolished buildings on Fifth Avenue and 22nd Street. In 1889, the Central Park Rangers were created to manage Floral Park and its environs. The first gardens were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who also designed New York's Madison Square Garden. The largest garden in Floral Park is Great Meadow which covers an area of 58 acres (24 hectares). Many of today's notable trees were planted here including The Empire State Building, Herald Tower, and The Whitney Museum of American Art.
