Floral Park is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of the towns of Elmira and Niagara Falls. The population was 9,822 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Floral Park were French traders in 1614. Floral Park was formed from part of the Town of Niagara Falls by an act of the New York State Legislature on May 1, 1811. The town was named for Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., who had designed and developed much of what is now New York City. At its peak in 1827, Floral Park had a population of over 20,000 people. In 1892, when it shrunk to 3 square miles (8 km²), it became one of the last towns in upstate New York to be annexed into the city of Buffalo. In 1924, when Niagara Falls became a national park, Floral Park lost all its village-style buildings except for four churches and two Mechanics Institutes (the Mechanics Institute being demolished in 1959). Most remaining structures date from that time: The Stadium which housed NFL football games until 1951; Main Street where most businesses still stand today; Post Office (); Masonic Lodge (); and Gothic Revival-style Central School (). A few years later new construction began on what would become known as "The Loop" - an area including parts of both Main Street and Post Office Streets that has since been completely redeveloped into luxury offices, residences and other high-end retail establishments. At its peak this development included over 100 businesses employing around 2,500 people directly or indirectly. Completed in 1978 after more than $300 million dollars worth of investment by local developers John Hickey and his son Jack Hickey Sr., The Loop remains one of Buffalo's most successful commercial districts ever created with over 60 restaurants serving food ranging from casual dining to fine cuisine as well as 12 stores selling clothing and accessories totaling over $100 million annually sales!
