Floral Park, New York is a city in the Finger Lakes region of New York, United States. The population was 23,594 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oswego County and the largest city in its rural area. The land that now makes up Floral Park was first settled by German immigrants in 1776. A small community called "Villa Park" was established on what is now Elmwood Avenue and Strawberry Lane, east of downtown. In 1807, Farmingdale's first post office was established here. In 1828, Floral Park became part of Albany as part of theNEW YORK CITIES AND COUNTY FORMATION. In 1868, two years after Albany changed its name to New York City, Flower Fields became an incorporated town with a population of 1,000 people just outside of the city limits on Elmwood Avenue and Strawberry Lane between Main Street and Central Boulevard. The towns contained churches (First Presbyterian on Elmwood Ave., Methodist Episcopal on Strawberry Lane) as well as schools (Floral Park Elementary School from 1868-1920; Floral Park High School from 1920-1927). In 1898-99 there were discussions about creating a new suburb for Albanyans near Schenectady Convention Center by developers Edwin de la Renta and Augustus Fenton Grosvenor IV (grandson of Augustus Fenton). However no action occurred until 1907 when commissioners Wm Hickey (city councillor from 1899-1901) and George Mifflin developed a plan for what would become Floral Park which would include much more than just gardens; it would also encompass a large amusement park including Refreshment Garden south of Village Hall Drive where refreshments could be had before games or during halftime; ball fields northward along present day State Route 315 to meet Lake Placid Boulevard east thereof where cars could be parked while passengers walked to their destinations; picnic areas northward along present day State Route 316 past Highland Hospital west thereof until they reached Glen Road where access roads led into said picnic areas from both side streets; golf courses located within 2 miles radius only if purchasedathome sites were not available (); one such site was located within 100 feet' radius of today's village hall driveway off current State Route 315 under coveralls made out to Parnell Kline who owned it (). "The original plans called for an amusement park with rides such as 'the Crazy Horse,' 'Titanic,' 'The Arrowsmith,' 'Gone Girl,' etc.; several picnicking areas including those now known as Forest Lawn Cemetery and Sleepy Hollow Cemetery'; four tennis courts complete with regulation turf surface'; 25 villas completed with bedrooms upstairs/downstairs each style complete with private bathtub/shower combination accommodations;" It wasn't until 1912 that development began on what are today Arbor View Drive and Dutch Kills Creek which included planting 50 acres (20 hectares) of trees including Norway spruce (), black locust () and white oak (); 22 houses were built ; three lakes - Curly Brook (), Big Brook () and President's Creek () - were created . In 1916 Andrew Carnegie donated $5 million towards building a library in FloralPark which opened in 1928 adjacent to Village Hall Drive across from Applebee’s restaurant . The initial collection totaled over 400,000 items including rare books , manuscripts , prints & Photographs plus educational materials . Carnegie added an additional donation that same year making it possible for FloralPark’s library system to offer free reference services online dating back to 1978! Allowing adults ages 21+ internet access without having to leave their home – this service continues today! Today’s library has over 4 million items cataloged!!! During World War II many people left FlorialPark due to rationing but returned following the war like Forrest Gump did when he moved back in 1969 ! He currently resides here permanently though his son still lives there (& visits)! The Floral Park area of New York City was first settled in the late 16th century by Dutch immigrants. The Dutch named the area "Willemsbad" (meaning "Island of William"), after King William of Orange, who had defeated Spanish forces at the Battle of Monmouth in 1685. In 1792, a group of Englishmen and Irishmen led by Jameson Orpen established a small farm on what is now Elm Grove Avenue in Floral Park. The English name for the area was changed to Floral Park after Orpen's daughter married an American Revolutionary War general, John Jacob Astor. After America won its independence from Great Britain, Floral Park became part of New York State and was renamed Prospect Heights in 1821. In 1833, the town seat was moved from Elm Grove to Floral Park after it became apparent that there would be little development withinFloralPark itself. A train station and two stores were built on this site in 1835-36; both have since been demolished. In 1856, the United States acquired portions of Mexico and needed new land to build Fort Sumter on; as a result, the US government sold much of New York state to private investors for development into townships such as Westchester County and Nassau County.
