Floral Park is a small town in upstate New York, located on the southern end of Long Island. The population was 7,269 at the 2010 census. Floral Park is one of five towns in Nassau County and is part of the larger East Hampton Borough. The name "Floral Park" was given to the area by Reverend John Sloane in 1831 when he donated land to be used for public parkland. The first public park in Floral Park was opened in 1835. In 1893, Floral Park became a borough and was annexed by East Hampton. In 1951, Floral Park became a town again when it merged with nearby Hempstead Township. The merger allowed for more than just a single school system for both towns - there were now three schools withinFloral Park: one high school (John Fenton), one middle school (Hempstead Elementary School), and one elementary school (Lincoln Avenue School). Today, FloralPark's three schools are home to over 1,000 students from pre-K through 12th grade; as well as an array of extracurricular programs and clubs! Floral Park is a neighborhood in the Bronx of New York City. It is bordered by Jerome Avenue to the north, Lexington Avenue to the east, Fordham Road to the south, and Riverside Drive to the west. The area was first settled in 1800 by Dutch people who named it "Willemstad". In 1814, Floral Park was annexed by New York City and became part of what is now Bronx. The flower garden that still exists on Jerome Avenue near where Floral Park began can be traced back to 1892 when a group of women used a large plot in Central Park as their floral garden. In 1907, Floral Park was renamed for Princesse de Polignac because her husband Prince Alexandre had donated land for a Botanical Gardens within its boundaries. Princess de Polignac died in 1907 and her son succeeded her as Duke de Polignac. When he married Alice Bogan he also gifted land in nearby Morrisania which served as his private gardens until his death in 1969. After Alice's death, many of her assets were sold off and eventually divided among several descendants including represented at an auction held at Christie's on November 10th 2006. The development around Jerome Avenue has been primarily residential since World War II when many families moved into Garden State Parkway projects just south of Jerome Ave leading up towards Yankee Stadiums then South Ferry Terminal with access from Henry Hudson Parkway (now Brooklyn- Queens Boulevard). Many current residents are descendents of those early settlers or their children or grandchildren who continued living there after moving away from Midtown Manhattan during the postwar years due largely to high housing prices which have only increased since then despite economic disasters like 9/11/2001 which caused massive job losses throughout much of downtown Manhattan although some manufacturers have reopened there such as Gartner Incorporated whose headquarters are now located at One Morgan Street inside Lower Manhattan again partially thanks to Mayor Bloomberg's efforts) . Some businesses that remain in FloralPark include: Flower Emporium; Honeysuckle & Honey; Mrs Putney's Tea Room; Imperial Fruits & Vegetables; Anson Mills; Jardin des Plantes; Empire Flour Millinery Co.; The Arches Bakery; Aveda Cosmetics Corporation (headquarters relocated from Amherst MA); American Weighing Scale Corporation (headquarters relocated from former Newark NJ plant); Zabar’s Food Mart Inc.; Stoneware Factory No 2 (now defunct). Many others have closed down over time or moved out while they continue being headquartered elsewhere within New York City with exceptions like Albertsons local store which remains open today inside Madison Yards adjacent to Madison Square Garden across 5th Ave./New York Sq.)
Floral Park was originally established in 1824 as a public square on the east side of Fifth Avenue and Central Park. It became one of New York City's most popular tourist destinations, hosting various events such as horse and carriage races, concerts, and balls. The property was purchased by John Jacob Astor in 1847 and changed hands several times before becoming part of the Rockefeller family'sestate in 1903.
