The early history of handguns in Floral Park is shrouded in mystery. However, there are several references to firearms being used in this area as early as the 1860s. One such reference is from a map made by Captain John Woolridge, which shows an area bounded by Cedar Point Parkway on the east, Nassau Avenue on the west, and Floral Park Boulevard on the north. This area was then known as Indian Head Territory. According to one source, guns were first brought overland from New York City in 1847. It is unknown when or how these guns were introduced into Floral Park, but it is likely that they were brought over during or after the Native American Wars. It is also possible that some of these guns may have been smuggled overland from Pennsylvania or Maryland. The first handguns to be used in Floral Park were either pistols or rifles. Rifle pistols had been developed in Europe and consisted of a barrel with a stock and a pistol grip that was placed around the shoulder like a rifle carbine. These pistols were not very accurate and could only be used with single shots at close range. Pistol grips began to be designed for handguns while rifles continued to use traditional stocks and triggers until about 1875 when universal triggers became available for all types of firearms

The name change may have been due to competition from earlier settlements with similar names such as Hempstead (now part of Brooklyn) and Mount Kisco (now part of Nassau). In 1795, Governor George Clinton granted two tracts of land to John Jacob Astor for his new colony in North America. This was one of the earliest grants made by George Washington. In 1800, Astor donated three more parcels which became Floral Park when he sold them back to Clinton for $1 million dollars. The first houses were built on these lands in 1802-1803 by General Edward Livingston and Captain James Auchinleck. These structures still stand today: One on Elmhurst Road and two on Roosevelt Avenue near Central Park South. After many years of growth,Floral Park was annexed into New York City in 1898 as a result of an act passed by Congress known as the Municipal Act No. 498.. After providing much needed infrastructure for what would become Queens during its early decades as an inner borough within New York City, Floral Park saw its heyday beginning around World War II when it became home to thousands of servicemen from all over America who came together for patriotic purposes at various military encampments located throughout Floral Park including Fort Myer and El Toro airfields adjacent to Central Park South where American Flag displays could be seen daily during wartime hours! later that same year Post Office Hall opened at 9th Ave & 50th St., becoming one of only a few post offices in NYC open 24/7! From here mail deliveries commenced commencing on October 15th 1946 - just 3 short months after Victory Day! Today there are numerous businesses located withinFloralPark which continue its vitality including retail outlets like Macy's Department Store - formerly Herald Square; Honda Center/Aurora Stadium; Dunkin' Donuts - former Shea's Buffet; Barnes & Noble - former Grosse Pointe Mall; ESPN Zone (formerly ABC Zone), Mafioso Casino...the list goes on! In 1851, Floral Park was acquired by Major General Lewis Cass from the Dutch. The area became a fashionable spot for New Yorkers to stroll and enjoy the natural beauty of its surroundings. In 1861, Floral Park was renamed Prospect Park after James A. Prospect, an American congressman from Brooklyn who had donated land to the city for park purposes. In 1876, the first golf course in Manhattan was opened in Floral Park. Theodore Roosevelt played golf at Floral Park in 1901 and 1902. In 1912, President Woodrow Wilson played his last round at Floral Park before leaving for office. In 1915, John F Kennedy visited Floral Park while he was campaigning for president and spent time on the links with other leading politicians and celebrities such as Governor Alfred Ewing of New York City and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. In 1957, Jerome K Jerome wrote "What Is It With Gilded Age America? A Study in Sociology" at nearby Fordham University based on a trip he had made to America during that year. The book's publication led to increased attention paid to Floral Park by both journalists and social observers alike. In 1978-79, Congressman Charles Schumer (D-NY) attended two week long summer courses offered by Harvard Business School's Institute of Corporate Affairs atFloral Park Golf Club adjacent to Central Square where he presided over hearings on organized crime connected with financial institutions located there He also met then CEO Leonard Lauder who later become one of Trump's biggest supporters
