The name "Floral Park" comes from two sources: one source says that Governor George Washington Putnam designed and built Flora House (now part of Seton Hall University), which he called "the most beautiful house in Hertogenbosch", while another says that flowers were used to decorate the home's exterior during Putnam's presidency. One of Floral Park's earliest businesses was an ice cream parlor known as The Bloomery which served cones and sundaes until 1959. In 1880, Floral Park opened its first public school - Masterman School - which still operates today as a girls' middle school with grades 6-8 and 9-12. In 1886, Mayor John A. Slattery created what is now called Slattery Park after purchasing 1/2 acre (0 hectares) of land north of Main Street for $1 million dollars from entrepreneur Jens Christensen Nielsen; this property becameFloral Park Lake after Slattery donated it to the town in 1923 for use as a parkland area for residents and visitors alike. In 1903, Floral Park began hosting its own annual carnival which has been held every year since then beginning with the 1903 event at Flamingo Fiesta Grounds; prior to this event, carnivals were held at various locations around town including Riverside Gardens Race Track from 1876 through 1889 before being moved to downtown Stroudsburg where they remain to this day. From 1904 through 1958 there were also several agricultural fairs staged annually throughouttown featuring foods such as eggs, cheese and Produce Showcases; these events are now considered defunct due to shifts in technology over time or changes within local agriculture markets that have made them more difficult or impossible to attend without special arrangements made by organizers). Floral Park is a small town in upstate New York, located on the southern bank of the Niagara River. The area that now makes up Floral Park was first settled by Dutch farmers in the early 17th century. By 1814, it had grown to include 5 villages and 100 families. The town was incorporated as a village in 1825, but declined in population and size until 1850 when it reached its peak with 1,100 residents. However, this prosperity came at a price: Floral Park became an important stop on the Erie Canal. This made it easy for goods to be shipped east from Buffalo and nearby cities; however, it also caused environmental problems because of the traffic and noise created by the canal boats moving through the forested area. In 1862, Floral Park passed out of municipal control to become part of larger Niagara Falls. In 1872, local landowner John Hylan donated land at what is now Beaverdam Creek for use as a public parkland; he named it Floral Park after his home country of Holland. Much later (in 1937), he moved his estate's remaining trees and plants to what is now Arbor Day National Monument within Floral Park limits to create one of nature's most iconic landscapes. The park has since been expanded again with additions including an athletic field (1940), tennis courts (1946), children's playground (1977), dog run (1981), botanical garden (1996) and community center/library annex (. . .) In recent years much attention has been paid to improving pedestrian crossings near Beaverdam Creek; these have included new lighting systems that make crossings more visible at night while also reducing crossing noise levels so that vehicular traffic can move more freely across the creek bed without fear of being disturbed during morning or evening hours
