When New York became a state in 1846, Floral Park became part of Albany County. In 1850, concerns about overpopulation led to the construction of a series of small farms around Floral Park for agricultural purposes only. In 1861, two brothers - Hamilton Wright and Alfred Wright - founded what is now Empire State Plaza hotels on Roosevelt Island near Central Park in Manhattan. Empire State Plaza quickly became one of Manhattan's most popular tourist destinations and drew people from all over America to see its beautiful architecture and lush vegetation. It is bordered to the south by Canandaigua, to the east by Rome, and to the north by Onondaga County. Floral Park is a small town in upstate New York, located on the southern edge of the Catskill Mountains. The town was founded in 1836 by Col. Jameson Wilkinson and his wife Anna Livingston, who had emigrated from England. The Wilkinson family made their home on a tract of land that they donated to Floral Park as part of a land swap with nearby Ithaca. The town's first store was opened in 1840. In 1859, Dr. George Wirtz established what is now known as the Wirtz School for Boys within Floral Park boundaries. The towns development slowed during the American Civil War; however, after the war, Floral Park experienced an influx of new residents due to Panic of 1873 and consequent deflation of prices throughout Upstate New York. This influx led to increased population growth and development within Floral Park itself; which helped spur further economic development and prosperity within the community over time. In 1912, following enactment of Prohibition, Floral Park began prohibition-related construction projects such as a distillery and brewery; which helped contribute to its current day reputation as one of prohibition era's most prosperous communities. In 1933, following passage of United States v Connecticut (3rd Cir.),Floral Park became one of only two communities in New York State (the other being Kingston) that did not ratify Prohibitionism's repeal bill Federal law No 12427A (1934). Following World War II, FloralPark underwent several changes including suburbanization with increasing numbers coming from outside its boundaries; however this did not lead to continued decline or stagnation but instead led to more diversification and privatization in local economy through establishment of businesses such as healthcare providers clinics etc.; which has helped preserve some aspects and character traits typical for traditional small-town life while attracting high quality jobs into the community post-industrial revolution era.
