Floral Park is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 5,549 at the 2010 census. The name of thetown is derived from nearby Floral Park Lake, which once hosted a largeFair. Today's town developed around the original farmsteads and plantations of Dutch farmers in the early 19th century. In 1814, Isaac Van Cortlandt founded what is now Floral Park as part of his larger land purchase in Wayne County. He named it for his birthplace, Flanders (now Utrecht), Netherlands. In 1824, he donated land to the Town of Fordham and renamed it Floral Park after himself and his wife Eleanor (née Smith). In 1830, he donated another piece of property to the Town of Hyde Park; this time its name was changed to Floral Park Lake because much of it still remains undeveloped today. In 1847 when New York became anederate state, Floral Park became part of Rockland County as well. It remained an agricultural community until about 1870 when manufacturing began to take hold in FloralPark with production of shoes and other cloth goods becoming important exports from the area. By 1890 there were over 100 businesses operating in town with a population over 1,000 people. During World War II many local residents made their homes into military barracks while others worked on war-time projects such as building bridges and airstrips across Long Island Sound or providing munitions supplies to Japan during World War II. After the war ended most residents returned home but some continued to live inFloralPark until they moved away again during times such as the early 21st century when development proposals forthe town center were announced by officials responsible forWestchester County municipalities...The proposal includes construction of a large shopping mall adjacent toI-495/I-95 known locally as "The Gartner", which would house more than 200 stores along with hotels and offices...A referendum held bythe citizensry on August 10th 2006 resultedin a defeat for developers who had petitioned for annexation intoNewYork City due to high taxes and current traffic congestion caused by recent development withinFloralland Pkwy., which traverses through centralFloraldistrict between Fordham University & Harlem Highway
The first European to visit Floral Park was Pierre-Simon Laplace in 1764. The park was named for the collection of tulips that grew there. The first house in Floral Park was built by Nicholas de Montresor in 1787.
