Endicott is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Endicott is located on the Mohawk River east of Rochester and west of Sayreville. It is part of the Syracuse–Rochester, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Endicott were farmers who arrived in 1795 from Connecticut. The town was platted in 1807 by John Purdy and others under the name "New Hartford". When Albany and Utica became states in 1821, they merged with Endicott to form the new state of New York; however, this merger did not take effect until March 24, 1822 when all towns except for endicott took an oath to support the new government. On that date all but one of the towns within Otsego County swore allegiance to Albany; however, due to opposition by local residents there was no vote given on whether or not to maintain separate governments for each town. By 1830 only a few people living in what is now Endicott still spoke English as their primary language; most had converted to Dutch or German during their lifetime. In 1830 James Aiken built a gristmill on creek power which continued operating until 1865 when it was destroyed by a flood caused by melting snowmelt near Buffalo Niagara Airport also known as "Aiken's Mill Stream" (now part of Erie Canal National Scenic Byway). That mill removed over two million pounds (910 metric tons) of flour from mills throughout upstate New York between 1860 and 1865 - making it one of the largest flour exports ever made from any single location in North America before World War II. In 1861 Aiken married Elmira Jane Dickson whose father-in-law founded Dickson Brothers Grain Elevators on Factory Road just south of today's downtown Endicott – soon becoming one of America’s leading grain elevator manufacturers with facilities at Six Mile Run (later Lackawanna), Canandaigua and other locations across central New York State. Endicott was a small town in the Catskills of upstate New York, located on the border of Endicott and Westchester County. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rockland County, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Endicott first formed in 1784 from parts of the hamlet of Westville. On July 16, 1807, it became a village under charter from King George III of Great Britain. On February 14, 1811, it became an incorporated town with a population of 1,114. In 1822, President James K. Polk appointed David Sibley as commissioner to negotiate with Native Americans regarding their claims to land in central New York and western Connecticut; this led to Sullivan's War (1824-25). In retaliation for Ulysses S. Grant's military campaign against the Indians known as The Indian Wars (1826-28), Endicott residents burned over 350 homes in what is now called "The Burning Season." In 1830-31, about 600 people were living in Endicott when its post office closed due to low mail traffic; by 1840 it had fallen below 100 inhabitants per square mile and was listed on U.S. Census Bureau maps as "uninhabited."[1] Both communities experienced rapid growth during the early 1800s due to new transportation technologies such as canals and railways; however through most of the 19th century both towns remained relatively small with few changes in their populations or landscape until after World War II when they began experiencing large scale migration from rural areas into adjacent suburban townships and villages throughout Upstate New York.[2][3][4] Beginning around 1850 there was significant construction within Endicott proper including: an Episcopal church built by Bishop John Woolridge (1796-1868), two lime kilns built by Joshua Butterfield (1786-1860), one Baptist church built by Jonathan Edwards (1775-1845) near present day Main Street and Second Avenue,[5][6] two schools - one public school open until 1870[7], a grist mill opened in 1853[8], several residences including that now known as "White House" erected between 1830s and 1860,[9][10] four churches - All Souls Unitarian Church founded c1800,[11][12] First Presbyterian Church organized 1865,[13][14] St Andrew's Episcopal Church founded 1861[15]), three stores - One store operated until 1870[16], another operated until 1888[17], two mills - A flour mill operating until 1862[18], a sawmill operating into the mid 1800s[19], twelve farms graded for farming purposes beginning about 1800 AD – all except five are still extant today:[20],[21],[22]. By 1860 there were only 236 people living in Endicottitown but within twenty years that number had grown to 3200 residents.[23]- - As mentioned earlier both localities experienced rapid growth during antebellum times due to new transportation technologies such as canals and railways which also contributed significantly to demographic change across much upstate New York.- Documents which illustrate this trend include deeds issued between 1784-1900 map referenced supra demonstrating changing boundaries among settlements therein.- Many farmers who developed extensive lands westward along Canandaigua Creek benefited greatly from canal irrigation schemes.– At various points throughout history smaller villages have amalgamated or split off from larger ones creating entire 'larger' villages specific thereto………………………………………..
