The first settler arrived in 1798 and named it after Sir John Percival Enderby, 1st Baronet (1684-1746). The town became a village in 1831. In 1871, it became a town when voters approved a resolution to that effect by an overwhelming margin. The downtown business district is one of the most active areas in the town, with several galleries and restaurants as well as banks and other retail businesses including Grocery Outlet Mall and Sears clothing store chain stores which closed their doors in late 2018 but reopened later that year under new management before being sold again to close for good at the end of 2019). In recent years there has been much development around Endicott's water supply; notably two major developments: One near downtown which includes over 100 acres (40 hectares) of wetlands used for drinking water storage and treatment;[2] and another just outside the town limits on land once occupied by a dairy farm which has been transformed into an open-air shopping mall with over 150 stores,[3] including Macy's department store chain.[4]

Endicott is a town in western New York, United States. The population was 11,893 at the 2010 census. Endicott is part of the Oneonta-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Endicott was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1619 and named after Nicholas-Jacques Endicot, an aristocrat from Holland who had purchased land in what is now Orange County, New York. In 1795, the town became part of Albany County and was renamed for James Monroe (1751–1825), the 25th president of the United States (1825–29). In 1824, George Washington bought five thousand acres (20 km2) around present day Endicott for $10 per acre. He named it Easton because he had been to Westmoreland County near Lancaster on his way to visit General John Forbes during the American Revolution. With this purchase and accompanying land grants from other presidents such as Jefferson and James Kieft, EndicOTT became one of America's largest rural settlements outside of cities or states with large areas under cultivation. The first post office in Endicott opened on November 15, 1826; it was called "Baldwinstown". The name changed to "Endicott" on May 1st 1839 when Andrew Wylie took office as Postmaster General; he recommended that all post offices be given names which would identify them geographically within their respective counties or townships: "Albany", "Aldrich", "Ancaster", etcetera. In 1852 Mayor Elias Howe moved his entire staff into government buildings located on Main Street between First Avenue and Fifth Avenue; these buildings were later destroyed by fire in 1865 while still being used as city hall. Of note are three tree-lined streets running through downtown – Howe Street (now Elmira Road), Second Avenue North (now Clinton Avenue), and Third Avenue South (now State Street). These streets are also important historically because they served as access routes for Revolutionary War veterans moving into nearby villages during the early days of settlement hereabouts
The town of Endicott, New York was first settled in 1772 by the Dutch. The town was renamed for James Prescott Forbes in 1814. In 1825, the town was moved from its original location on the west side of Mohawk River to its present location on the east side of Mohawk River. Endicott is one of eight towns in Chemung County and is located within the end of Fullerton Lake.
