Endicott is named after General George Washington's brother Major Benjamin Endicott (1726-1800), who served as Commandant and Adjutant General ofatts Rangers during the French and Indian War. Many of the buildings in town were built by settlers and their families during that time period. The first permanent settler in what is now Endicott was Captain John Tryon in 1772. Tryon purchased land from the Mohawks for £2 per acre. Tryon built his home at Tryon's Mill oncurrent creek near present day Main Street. He also founded Saybrook Chapel which still stands today on Saybrook Road east of Post Road (now US Route 9). Captain John Tryon had two children, his wife Deborah and their son Philip Tryon Jr.. Deborah married Samuel Tompkins who also founded Tompkins Tavern which still stands today across from Union High School on State Street just south of Interstate 95/I-95 Business Loop. Captain John Tryon died one year later while out exploring new territory along the west bank of the Mohawk River with his company organized into three companies under Colonel James Clinton – one led by Captain Benjamin Hendricks – another commanded by Major David Wooster – and lastly Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Platt organized under Colonel Edward Livingston to explore all possible routes between Albany and Quebec City through this area including upriver to Fort Niagara etc.). In 1773 when Tryon left for Canada he Leave Two Sons behind him namely Benjamin (John)Tryon who succeeded him as captain of Rangers under Captains Anthony Lappin & Jonathan Meigs; Joshua Day Conger took over command but died young before reaching Canada leaving an uncleship chargeable to Daniel Day Conger This left Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Platt with authority over Ranger forces stationed at Crown Heights where he built a fortified checkpoint known asFort Niagara where American rebels fought British forces during the American Revolution . colonel Livingston sent platt back down river with 2 Companies Of Rangers To reconnoiter And report back On What Other Routes Were Available For Importation Into Quebec City From America Which He Suggested Would Be By Way Of Kingston Upon Hull arriving there September 15th 1775 After A Monthlong journey he returned BACK UP RIVER TO COWPENS HILL WHERE HE BUILT HIS FIRST FORTifications Later That Year He Built ANOTHER FORTification ALSO KNOW AS NIAGARA FORTIFICATION WHICH TIME WILL BE REFERRED TO AS ENDICOTT FORTIFICATION . colonel Livingston Said If We Can Keep These Forts Locked Away Somebody Else Will Come And Take Them So Webetter Have Them There To Protect Us From Others . these Forts lasted until The American Revolution ended In 1783 When They Were dismantled And ALL OF THE LAND THEY WERE ON WAS SOLD TO THE ENGLISH BECOMINGTHE NEWON COUNTY INCarceration rates then ranged FROM 1 TO 3 YEARS BUT NOW ARE ONLY around 12 MONTHS WITH A MINIMUM OF 6 MONTHS AND NO MORE than 24 HOURS IN ANY GUEST HOUSE OR JAIL TV CONVERTER HAS BEEN USED IN PREVIOUS YEARS THANKSGIVING DAY THANKSGIVINGDAY In 1825 Nathaniel Wyeth settled hereabouts after traveling through North America preaching Christianity to Indians living along both banks of the river St Lawrence coming from what is now Ontario The first post office was established here on October 10th 1827 by Hiram Dixson It was moved to Ossining in 1829 Erickus Morse set up a blacksmith shop here about 1830 These days it’s called Morse’s Forge forge Museum & Forge Gallery A group of men led by Ebenezer Scudder formed a meeting house here Dec 27th 1830 plying their trade as farmers selling goods grown or raised near them within easy access join together with other like minded people formed into a society calling themselves “the moral society” they met monthly to discuss common concerns such as religious instruction & publick worship among others they soon decided that they would like their own township called “Endicott” scudder offered to name it after himself & others in attendance agreed so endecotty Was born on December 27th 1830 . read more...
