The first settler in Endicott was Nicholas de Courtenay in 1664. The town was named for General John Endicott who fought against the Iroquois Confederacy during the American Revolution. The first stores were established and post office was established in 1796. In 1812, the village of Endicott merged into Endicott Township. In 1847, the township became an independent municipality and was renamed "Endicott". On July 1, 1954, it merged with neighboring Hempstead to form Oneonta-Hempstead Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Endicott is home to three high schools: Oneonta High School (grades 9-12), East Side Academy (grades 11-13), and West Side Academy (grades 14-18). There are also six middle schools: Arlington Middle School (grades 7-8), Brighton Middle School (grades 9-10), Central Middle School (grades 11-, 12-, 13-, 14-, 15-, and 16-year olds), Granite Falls Middle School (grades 7-9), Hicksville Middle School (grades 10-11), Indian Head Middle School (grade 12) and Northside Intermediate/Secondary Schools District 2 which includes Ashtabula Highschool(ages 11+, 12+, 13+)/Southside Intermediate/Secondary Schools District 3 which includes Albion Highschool(ages 8+, 9+, 10+)/. Finally there are two special education programs: Gibson Creek Alternative Learning Center for gifted children and South River Elementary for students with speech or language impairments The public school system offers a variety of services such as sports teams that include baseball, basketball, cross country running, football, golfing club volleyball etc.; music lessons; art classes; DPWD summer jobs; after school programs; morning news briefs; advanced placement courses offered through SUNY Cortland Valley's Dual Language Immersion program As one of only two towns in New York State without its own police department - until 1967 citizens had to rely on neighbouring Hempstead Police Department - policing duties were handled by Volunteer Fire Department until 2006 when a new $7 million dollar facility opened making Endicott one of only 4 towns in New York State with its own fire department . This led to the development of what is now known as walking on two legs (or running). Eventually, many different animal species became proficient at using their feet as mobile platforms for locomotion through evolution – including horses, dogs, cats, gorillas, chimpanzees, and our own human ancestors (Homo sapiens). With this capability comes a new set of challenges: How do you balance your weight while moving? What are some potential obstacles you may encounter while running or walking? In 1807, John Morse moved to Endicott and began to operate a gristmill that became one of the most important businesses in town. Other early industries included wagonmaking and tanning. In 1814, George Washington visited Endicott while on his way to Niagara Falls and stayed at the Wadsworth house for five days before departing for his retreat at Fort Erie. On October 12th that year he was assassinated near Kingston on Long Island by Michael Malloy (a member of the British army), an act which has been called one of America's most notorious assassinations In 1855, Abram Hewitt established a sawmill on Crescent Street which became one of the largest mills in town with its four stories tall water towers still standing today In 1902 Julius Rosenwald founded Sears Roebuck & Co., one of America's largest department stores In 1953 Jerome Kosinsky opened what would become Eastern European’s only US store The last major industry outside agriculture until recently was manufacturing when personal computers started to be produced here Today Endicott is known for its farmers markets which are held every Saturday morning starting at 9 am or thereabouts throughout much of summertime
