Endicott is a small town in upstate New York, population about 10,000. It was first settled by the Dutch in 1636 and became part of the United States of America in 1776. The town's name is taken from English general Sir Thomas Endicott, who fought against Native Americans in North America during the early eighteenth century. In 1881, Endicott became an incorporated village with a population of 511. In 1973, it merged with neighboring Amherst to form the enlarged town of Endicott-Amherst. The merger was approved by the New York State Legislature and took effect on January 1, 1974. Endicott has two schools: one public and one private. The public school system has 11th-12th grade students; there are also three kindergartens and four homeschooling programs available for children aged 0-6 years old. There are also several businesses located in Endicott: an ice cream parlor, a convenience store, a post office, two restaurants (one Italian), a bank (First Niagara Bank), and five churches (New Life Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church of Endicotto/Amherst Junction Congregational Church/Church of God The Flying Spaghetti Monster/Catholic Apostolic church). The biggest employer in Endicott is First Niagara Bank which employs over 200 people including many retirees from former local mills that closed down during the late 1970s and early 1980s due to deregulation of industry within the United States. Other big employers include US Steel Corp., IBM - now Alexion Pharmaceuticals - since its merger with Alliant Techsystems Inc., TIAA-CREF - formerly Time Warner Inc.- now Verizon Communications Inc., Ford Motor Company - until recently Budd International LLC,- as well as numerous smaller businesses such as Meyers Boot & Shoe Co., Applebees restaurant chain/, Freedom Furniture Ltd., Mutual Aid Society
Endicott was a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2000 census. The name is derived from the nearby village of Endicott and its post office. The first Europeans to visit what is now Endicott were French traders in 1664-1665. They named the place "Piscataqua." In 1702, John Graves Simcoe founded the township of George Washington in this area. It became part of Allegany County in 1825. In 1842, local businessman James A. Kelly donated land for a high school and gymnasium on which Endicott Union High School was built in 1845-46. In 1896, the school became one of two high schools within Unitarian Universalist Community College (now SUNY Empire) system when it merged with that institution's Endicott Campus. In 1897-98, construction began on what is now known as "The George Washington Bridge," linking Albany and Buffalo over the Niagara River; it was completed in 1903 and remains one of Canada's most popular tourist attractions today.
